First off, do Official APLA clubs exist?  I'm talking clubs that are recognized as local "chapters" by the APLA.  Like we see with the Hunt Test folks from the HRC and AKC.

If not, has the APLA put any thought into starting this process?  I think it will help with membership, and the setup and execution of tests.

We have a pretty strong group of PL folks here in MN that want to get a full blown club going, but I believe the main thing we are lacking is the clear structure and guidelines of what it would take to be an extension of the APLA.  The HRC and AKC folks seem to have it figured out, how about the APLA?

Jason, there have been local clubs in the past, the old Rocky Mountain Pointing Labrador Club still exists in the Denver area though it no longer holds meetings. None have been officially sanctioned by the APLA, though they have helped put on APLA events. Currently, there is nothing to stop anyone from organizing and working to put on events, including working with the APLA to host those events there. When the organization grows to a large and widely spread enough population, that may be very workable.

Do what we did here in the west and get going if you have all those folks. It will only help the APLA and the Minnesota folks. There is nothing written to establish how satellites will function; the best way to get that is to get your club up and running and make it happen because they are doing so well.

This is my input, I am sure other folks will have ideas.

What about a geographically sorted list of members?  I'd love to find other PL people close enough to me to train with...(sorry to hijack the thread, but same idea...)

Very do-able. If when everyone fills out their membership, they allow release of location, email, some kind of information that allows that, it will be available on the membership list which should show up on this site in the not too distant future. A good idea.

Jason,  We kind of have a similar thing going here in NW Missouri.  No official club but we have been getting together in the spring and in the fall to train.  I think it is a great idea and agree with Julie in that there are no official rules for or against it at this point.  If you want to get a group of APLA folks together you are more than welcome and it would be great to put forth your efforts as a group to host a test event and or training day.  Maybe as this orginization grows and we get more and more folks it will be wise for the board to allow for this on an official basis.  It maybe something that a committee could look in to and make a reccomendation to the board.

Bottom Line, good idea in my book! We need to harness the energy of the members of the APLA and regional chapters would be a great way to do that.  I know other APLA members that have been thinking along the same lines.

Joe

Speaking of which,  MOKAN folks we need to start thinking about a Spring Training day!  Mid March sounds good to me, just prior to the First Test of the year.  The way this winter has been we could have one at any time.

I like the idea of being able to locate other members to train with, either via a map or by some other means.  Maybe drill down links listing members who authorize release of location by state and city,  or a forum specifically dedicated to those looking for others to train with.    We do have to be careful about what kind of information we make public and would have to control that carefully.  Our members privacy is important to us of course.  For a map, as a minimum, a home town and a clickable link to an email address  the member has authorized release of may be an option.   Google Earth and or Microsoft MapPoint come to mind.  Hmmmmm  We will have to think on that one.  The Forum would be easy to implement!  Map would take a little doing, but doable.

Joe- Caution should be considered by all posting personal info on a public location such as this.  Isn't there a section that is only available to members signed in? That could be a start.
Even though I kinda wanted to be in the address book i opted out on the sign up sheet - Still at high alert ya know

Steve, agreed.  And yes there are many areas of the site only visible to members and or different types of members ie: Judges, Board Members etc.

That is kinda why I like and have seen in use on other sites a forum or similar such thing where one could post "looking for a training partner in such and such area etc".   Kinda like matchmaking for Pointing Lab Lovers.  That way we put the oness on the person posting or responding to a post to share what ever information they want to share at that time.

I'm really liking how this site is developing...

Something else to think about..but not sure how to do it...As Jason said in his original post...there are a lot of pl folks in Minnesota..that really want to make this work...alot of us are rookies...and have no idea where to start...

The question has been asked on the Minnesota PL forum "Is there a APLA event planned for Minnesota this year????"

unfortunately....there has been no response to the question...

how do we as rookies....find out who put the last one together???...how do we volunteer to help??...how do we contact those in the "know"???

So we are back to a "list" of folks that worked an event...with email addresses etc...that we can contact...and let them know we are here If you need us..

With Iowa, Wisconsin, North and South Dakota surronding us...with a large number of PL owners in each...maybe instead of a state by state data base...start off with regional areas...i.e....north central...south eastern...north eastern, midwest etc etc....as we grow...then maybe break it down to state by state...

There is no event I know of scheduled for Minnesota. Maybe the Minnesota bunch can travel to Illinois and assist in that event, learn how much work goes into it, how labor intensive it is during the days of the event, the days before and the days after, and then put in for a test next spring or later this fall. I would strongly suggest anyone interested in holding one of these get some good first hand knowledge with the experienced test folks before trying it. Stu, you contact those in the know right here. Don't just go to an event and watch, it all seems so simple. Go and be the stake Marshall, the bird thrower, the equipment set up and tear down guy a a few times...

As far as making contacts, a thread could be started right here stating interest in any given area. Then the head 'interest' guy could receive emails from interested contacts, thereby avoiding too much of the weirdo phenomenon. Organize, get some training days going the way Joe-the-web-guy has and you're on your way. Warning, people talk more than they actually act, so plan on 50% or less showing up than state interest. Once you get a group of people who know how to get their hands on a good bird supply, who have access to good grounds, who have equipment to shoot, have holding blinds, guns, duck calls, good throwing arms, etc., then you'll begin to have the makings for test holding..

Julie,

We had an event in Minnesota last spring...at Lonsdale....those that put it on were the ones I was refering too...and want to contact...to do just that....help in anyway I can....I have no problem getting my hands dirty and am willing to travel to help in another event in another state...I would love to learn how this all works...I volunteered to help in South Dakota last fall...but unfortunately it was the same time as my daughter was home on leave from the military...

If they need help in Iowa....Or South Dakota is putting on a fall test....the person in the "know" can email me...

I've always thought that this was a good idea even if the APLA is not as large as it should be to support such clubs. Work out a deal with the APLA on how much money each side would get for the test profits, so that the clubs would actually want to hold a test and make some money doing it, and give the clubs a spot somewhere on this site to draw up more local interest. One of the main problems that I have with the APLA is how distant it feels. This new website REALLY helps, but having the possibility of a local club sure would make it a lot more welcoming. It would probably be easier to get this type of thing started now then to wait until we had a dozen or so clubs already formed.

StuW, I'm with you on this one, I want to help, but I know I'm not ready to lead.

Jay, I couldn't agree more.

All,
If you want to do a quick, unofficial member mapping, try www.frapper.com. One of the admin folks here could start an account(free), and people can add themselves to it, obviously, you're mainly going to get the web folks, but it's a start. Here's one I just started as an example.
