We are getting a new puppy (female) this summer. For those of you who have two dogs of different ages, I have a few questions.
First of all, let me describe my current pup. Maverick is about 15 months old and needs lots of work on socialization with other dogs. That is something that I am currently working with him on. He loves other dogs and always wants to go up to them and play. He is actually quite dominant with other dogs as I have never seen him show any signs of submission, however he has never shown "agression" either. Just a lot of rough play and posturing.
Now for the first question. How should I handle the initial introduction between the new pup and Maverick? I'm sure Maverick will not hurt the puppy, but I want to make sure it is conducted in a civil manner. Also, should they have limited contact for the first few days...weeks...months?
As for training, should I always train Maverick first (to reinforce his role as Alpha) or should I use this as an opportunity to make Maverick learn patience and to wait his turn (alternate)?
Should I always treat Maverick as the Alpha or should I try to treat them equal and let them settle the pecking order amongst themselves?
We are very excited to get our new addition (sometime in early July), but I want to be prepared for possible problems. I'm hoping the two dogs can become the best of friends and I'm looking to do everything possible to make that happen.
Thanks,
Rob |
