| I thought that this might need to be on a new thread.
You said, "So Doc...to change things up....An opinion or two please.I've got my pup(5mth) on Eagle Pack holistic select Lg and Giant breed puppy growth formula....Good Choice??? Keep him on till??? Thanks in advance...Paco"
I'm just wondering why the Holistic? Normally the Holistic formulas are for dogs that have allergy problems. If your pup has no allergy problems, I'd go to the "regular" Eagle Pack Large/Giant formula..... Nothing wrong with the Holistic, but you might be paying more $ for something you don't need.
Personally I like to keep them on puppy food until they are about one year old.

| It's what was on the shelf and I hadn't ordered in advance,as I need to(and was about out of his feed). His pop had ear issues and a no grain has cleared it up.The pup is getting alot of gunk in the ears also so thought I'd try this.In good with the feed store ,and the price is good in comparison with others, and this store will get me what I want. Thanks for your advice--Paco |

| I feed the same holistic formula and the pup seems to do great with it. I would feed the regular, but the holistic is what the feed store carries and they are the only one who carries it. I never thought to ask them to order the regular. |

If he is having food related gunky ears, you are better off with one (?which one?) of the many Holistic varities that Eagle Pack makes.
What else are you doing to treat or prevent the ear problems?

| Doc, As to what I am doing to treat or prevent ear problems...Oto Foam about weekly to a couple times a week, depending on time in water.Vet solutions ear astringent after swimming. Don't know if he has food related problems, and wasn't sure with his father(Gator)either, just put Gator on a no grain about April, and the ear problems went away.Really don't know that the pup has anything more than gunk from a lot of swimming,I live on a river and have a pond,so!!!!!Just know that his fathers ears cleared up with a change in diet.--Interested in your thoughts...Paco |

If a dog's ears are really badly infected, medications are needed -- Otherwise, it's very easy to overmedicate (which eventually makes the problem worse). Do a google search with the words "Purple Stuff". You'll find links where you can buy it already made up and you'll also find links so you can make your own (I think woodhavenlabs.com or something similar to that has the recipe and how to use it) It STAINS, so be careful where you use it ! Then I would add two big tablespoons of an unflavored/unsweetened yogurt (Nancy's brand is superb) to his food -- twice a day for a week, then twice a day every other day for a couple weeks, then one big tablespoon every other day from then on............... I'll bet you will be impressively amazed.

I made up a batch of the "purple stuff" last week. It did a great job of cleaning up the ears. Her ears are not bothering her anywhere near as much as before. We seemed to be fighting ear infections all summer long. She now gets a good dose once a week or after any time in the water. |
