Ok- Today was Day one of a triple header at the unbelieveably beautiful Larkspur Ranch and the start of the fall 2008 APLA test series. Another wild day- It seems they always are. Master started at 7 something am and the last dog was leaving the upland at ten to darkness! (I think it was 7:50 but it may have been 8:50 - all torn up by this central zone/ mountain time thing but you can see the sparks come out of that shotgun barrel at the end! Don't know much about results=that will get posted in a fort night or two. I do know that 2 of 7 APR passed- GO CHIEF! Less the 50% of CPR made it out of the upland and Master just would not end! Sorry I have no stats there. Here we have pics of the Handlers Meeting, the Start of the masters and the start of the CP.

Oh yea- It went from pleasantly cool to pretty darn hot with a wind that switched 4x by 10am then a thunderstrom cleared the mountain and dropped just enought to make my vehicle look nasty then it got hot and sunny with little wind and finally it was breezy and then dark! Go figure......

Here are a few from Sunday. Started out nice and cool with a breeze- but what happens up here is that as the day heats up at some point a wind switch happens- During that time it gets brutal for the dogs. 85' heat and dead wind made life tuff on the combined cPR/APR field running late am today. Here we have Kevin starting off apr and julie with one of the few dogs that survived the cp/ap upland.

Once the contestants moved on to the water it was Chiefs JOB to clear the field that was to be used for the masters later in the day. Oh Darn! Well at this time the wind was completely dead and it was hot and total sun. So after the run he really enjoyed soaking 'them' in the pools of COLD water that comes out of the mountains Later in the day clouds form off the mountain tops and the wind kicks- Made for GREAT upland conditions for the Masters. Most dogs did real good. Gunned for the masters but only got one nice pic of a point b4 the camera acted up. I have Had enough! Eyes are blood shot from the dust, Feet are sore and lips chapped. Now a 10 hour drive back to KC is the plan for tomorrow the holiday. Good luck to the folks running on day 3!

Here you are folks. I have the results for the first two days of the Master test. As Steve said, the conditions varied from very high winds that changed directions over at least 180 degrees of a circle to no wind at all. Where you were in the line up often increased or decreased your chances of a successful test.

The Saturday Master started at 0700 and ended at 1951 - or at least that was the time when I got in my car to go to the hotel. When I got there, I grabbed a Wendy's salad, then fell asleep halfway through eating it. I think I was tired.

We saw some very nice work, some questionable work and some dogs just having a bad day. However, out of 21 dogs actually there that day, seven passed.

In order of their numbers:
Haerter's Mohave Sophisticate (Sophie)
HPK's Hawk of Bearpoint (Hawk)
Elcanan's Roxy of Bearpoint (Roxy)
Tiger Mtns Button (Button)
Kiowa Creek Jesse James (Jesse)
Points S. Blue Bonnet Betty (Betty)
Black Forrest High Plains Rance (Rance)

Sunday I got to start at 0730 - woohoo, a late start- as this judge was tired. However Vic and Mike who was Apprenticing today, were there at 0700. It was the same old story regarding the wind and weather: the wind would be there, it would change direction, it would change intensity, the temperature would change 20 degrees up or down in an hour's time. We had 21 dogs starting and had some very interesting work on the land marks. We called back 17 to the water marks.

We had one very simple last bird down mark that just required a long swim, then a very "cheaty memory bird" with which many had problems. The blind required an angle entry with an angled swim of about 30 yards across the water. Many had problems with the second mark and the blind.

Upland conditions ranged from hot, to hot and windy, to cloudy and windy, to cloudy and no wind... It was tough for the dogs. One dog had some heat stress, and we requested the handler cool the dog down in a nearby pond. The dog was still a bit wobbly (and had completed the requirements for the test) - so we decided to leave it at that. Most birds were holding well, but 11 dogs dogs called back to the upland work, there were a ton of birds out there which caused some problems with the running dogs.

Given some tough conditions, we were so pleased to pass 9 of the 11 dogs that went to the upland field. I personally would like to congratulate Mr.Edward Jurkoshek whose wife Nancy Marshalled for us for two days and was the best I have every seen. To Ed, I am so sorry Cody did not pass on Saturday. He was so very good until he got into some trouble on the upland. However - kudos to you for coming back on Sunday and kicking some butt in the marks and blinds -AGAIN-, then going into the upland field and finishing your pass. From Dale, I understand you have done all of his training and it was so nice to see a test run by an Amateur trained dog done so well. You and your dog are the reason I will give up a weekend to judge! To Nancy - Thanks so much for keeping everything in order and dealing with my special dietary needs. You are a champ!

Now that you have read through all of this dribble -or not as the case may be, here are the results for the Master passes on Sunday in order of running number:
Haerter's Mohave Sophisticate (Sophie)
HPK's Hawk of Bearpoint (Hawk)
Medicine Beau's Sooner (Sooner)
Elcanan's Roxy of Bearpoint (Roxy)
Shotgun Stalker (Shotgun)
Tiger Mtns Button (Button)
Points S. Blue Bonnet Betty (Betty)
Black Forrest High Plains Rance (Rance)
Bearpoints Buffalo Bill Cody (Cody)

Dale and Brenda - Thanks for providing great help, grounds and a very wel organized test.
