Interesting that it is blood work and not swabs?

There was a good bit of discussion on blood vrs swabs on rtf. This is great news. Hope everyone thinking of breeding incorporates this test into their decisions. Since I had mine tested during the trial program I see no need to repeat it as Katie stated that the exact same test that is used in production was also used during the trials.

I won't ever buy another pup without OFA hips and elbows, CERF, PRA, CNM and EIC test results for the parents. I would buy a carrier pup-I just want to know what I am getting.

2bd, I am going to send Churchill's results from the study in to OFA with my CNM and PRA results and see if they accept it-but I bet in order to be "listed" you have to have the "official" test...even though it is the same one.

EDIT-here is a post from Katie Minor on RTF about the study results:

The hundreds of samples that were collected and tested on a research basis cannot be certified to have been collected from the named dog. There was no formal verification of identity (by tattoo or microchip) and in most cases the individual collecting the samples had no previous relationship with the dog or owner - we are therefore unable to certify that the result is indeed for the dog named on the research report.

Also, OFA is excepting results reported from the diagnostic lab, and none of the samples up until today have been run through or in association with their lab.

Looks like if you want to be in the results database on OFA, you will have to repeat the test.

An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.

Now we'll be able to see if my prediction that, "EIC will make CNM look like a pimple on an elephant's arse" is correct or not.

Since I am looking for a puppy in 2010, is there a place where these results will be available or do you have to rely on the breeder? When I got my last dog in 1996, you checked for CERF and OFA. Now, it appears, there are a lot more issues to worry about.

The "white list" for EIC results will be available on the OFA website as long as the dog owner has the test submitted by their veterinarian and submits the results to OFA with the proper fee.

This is awesome news for the breed. I have stated many times that I would not get another lab until this test was available and both sire and dam were tested. There is NO reason to ever create another EIC affected dog. It is time for all lab breeders to get their breeding stock tested and registered.

As a puppy buyer I would not consider a litter with untested sire and dam, but would consider buying a pup from the right breeding with one being clear and the other being a carrier. I have no plans to get into the breeding business, so a carrier would be fine for my needs.

Lord may I be half the man that my dogs think that I am!

Is there an age which the dog must be before they can draw blood and test?

I think the dog has to have "permanent ID"-microchip-so I think that would be the only limit on age. I am not sure how old a pup has to be to get a chip...
