This past week my dad drove over to my work site and broke the news to me that there had been an accident and that Gunner had died. He was my first pointing lab and one of my best hunting buddies. He was a year and a half old. Burried him beside his favorite waterfowl hole. He loved waterfowl hunting. LOST BUT NEVER FORGOTTEN....

Sorry to hear about Gunners passing. It is never easy how ever old the dogs are, but especially rough when they are as young as Gunner!
Hopefully better times are coming.

RIP Gunner...so sorry for your loss. My first PL was killed just past his first birthday, so I know how you feel...remember the good times with him, and try to find yourself another pup before too long...

Oh Lord,so sorry to hear about your loss. Have experienced tragic loss of a young dog myself.Gone but not forgotten to be sure, haunts me every day. But! We do move forward, and myself ,I would never have got my Gator boy. On the day of my loss,a friend who witnessed it ,said "the Lord works in mysterious ways".As time has passed I recall that alot, and still need some 'Splainin when and if I ever have the chance to meet this maker. KEEP MOVING FORWARD,GOOD LUCK.-------Paco

Having lost my hunting partner to old age earlier this year, the loss is still fresh with me as well. You have my condolensces. As with all great hunting partners, take lots of pictures so their memory lives on in the stories. As I am being told, a new dog will not replace the one we lost. They are each different. As time goes on, the pain will ease to be replaced by the fond memories.

Really sorry to hear that. Losing a pup sucks (any dog for that matter). Bow was 8.5 months when he died on July 2 and I still miss him, so I think I know how your feeling. Hang in there man.

Thanks everyone....It really means a lot. Id just soon not say how it happened because the people who were responsible for the incident feel bad enough about it and I dont want to them feel any worse by posting it on the internet. I dont blame them for what happened because they were honestly doing what they thought was a good idea that just happened to go south. I think i am going to hold off on getting a replacement for a few months atleast. When I do it will probably be a female. Just doesnt feel right to replace my left hand man(the side he always sat on) with another male.

It is never easy and accidents can happen in a heart beat. I had a scare with Meg (6yr old lab) yesterday. I was working on the trailer getting ready for a camping trip and had the side garage door open. I went inside and the dogs followed me and about an hour later Meg wanted in the back yard so I let her out and kept busy inside. A little later I noticed that Meg wasn't sunning herself on the back patio anymore so Shelby and I went out and I called for Meg. She wasn't in the yard, so I put Shelby up and headed for the river which is 5 lots away from our house as I figured that is one of the first places she would go. No Meg, now I am starting to get REAL worried, there is a fairly busy street about 3 blocks away and I started to head around the neighborhood. I rounded the corner by our house and there is Meg sitting with the girl that lives across the street from my Dad. They were cleaning their travel trailer and Meg stopped by to say Hi on her way to my Dads house.... It could have been a disaster if she would have turned right as she would have ended up on the busy road in 2 blocks.... I was happy to see her OK, but mad at myself for not closing the side garage door when we went in the house.

Give it time and your heart will let you know when it is time to get another pup. I have only lived for 5 days in my life of 52 years without a dog, so my heart would start to yell at me quickly. My kids have never lived a day without a dog. Just remember the good times and the love that Gunner gave you.

Ive had a few of our family farm dogs die over the years and its hard to see them go. But when its your own personal dog that you have raised from a pup, it makes it much harder. Im sure when goose season hits ill be missing that big blocky headed dog and start getting the itch for another. I do have my female, Teal, but shes never seen a canadian and females dont ussually have a mouth on them to grab the honkers like the males do, but im sure she will do just fine and will probably end up making me eat my words..lol.

I have seen and heard of some sad stories over the last few years though. A few years ago i was was hauling a load of corn into the elevator (opening weekend of SD pheasant season) and stopped at a gas station to get a pop for myself and the rest of the guys in the field. When i pulled in to the gas station there was a chevy suburban that pulled up with a bunch of Minnesota hunters (going by there plates on the suv) that had been out bird hunting. So i stopped and asked how the day was going. While the driver was talking to me he openned the back seat and let his black lab out for a drink of water. He poured the dog a drink in a bowl and kept talking to me. Across the street from this gas station is a man made pond in a park that geese and ducks land in all the time. The lab saw a pair of mallards walking along the grass and before the guy could grab his dog, the dog bolted across the 4 lane highway that plowed into the rear wheel of a passing semi truck and broke its neck. One of the saddest things I have ever seen.

Sorry to hear about your loss. Glad you are considering another dog. Ruby's Pal expressed the need for getting another dog (above) much better than I can articulate it.

Some times things just happen that are outside of our control. I hope you do end up finding another buddy to fill that spot for you.
