Headed into vet.  My wife called earlier and Bow had thrown up all of his food from this morning then after drinking a lot of water he did the same.  I phoned the vet and they said get him in.  Meanwhile he has had more water and thrown it up again.

He's acting like nothing is wrong, but can't keep anything down.  Vet thinks he may have eat something that is lodged in where the stomach meets the intestine.

I keep a close eye on him at all times, but he is as bad as any dog I've had about picking up anything and trying to eat it.  I keep a close eye on him to keep him from doing it, but apparently not close enough.

Wife just called and the xrays are being done right now. He already thought he could feel something, but wasn't sure. Initial estimates are $500 and if surgery were to be required were talking $1500 to $1800 dollars. I'm sure they can correct the problem, but the cost is gonna kill me.

I hope everthing works out for him, that care credit sounds like a good deal. I know I would have to do the same thing right now if I were in your shoes.

 Good luck, Steve

Wow, I'm sorry to hear about your pup. I too went down that same road when Maverick was about 1 year old. He'd eaten a rock and it lodged in his small intestines. Had it removed (about $2,000). All worked out well...I hope the same for you.

Keskam,
Thanks for the heads up.  I checked out their sight and immediately found out my vet is a participant.  My wife just filled the form out on-line and got immediate approval.  That was a blessing in an unexpected nightmare.

I've been given more of the story now.  This morning when he threw up, they found a small "bouncie" ball in with the food he had eaten.  While those balls are not dense enough to show up very well on an xray, the doc thinks he can see something about that size.  My kids have now admitted to having five of them out playing with them this morning.    They are about 1" in diameter.  The doc is hopeful that if that is what it is he'll pass it.

I'm taking him in tomorrow morning for another look.  I haven't seen the bill so far, but believe we are close to $500 right now.

Normally I would have backup cash for these kind of emergencies, but I just sent in my closing papers on a house in IL that I have been trying to sell for 2 yrs while living in CO and it destroyed the small reserve I had.  Started off thinking I would make money on the house, but with today's market, I'm happy to just get it sold.

This Emergency visit sure has taken the exitement out of finally selling this house.

There was a guy that went to our vets office, The guy said his golden would retrieve the golf balls he hit.He couldnt find 3 golf balls and about 3 to 4 days latter the dog started to get sick. Well they found the golf balls in his intestine. had the surgery, and 1 year later he came back into the vets office with the same problem! He pleaded with the vet that the dog was not retrieving golf balls anymore.. but sure enough 2 golf balls had him cloged up again! Even with kids I wouldnt have anything in the house smaller then a tennis ball. I hope the dog passes them. Is there a laxitive that they can give him. Or some WD-40 to make things slide easier? Sorry just kidding, Kevin

No problem with the kidding.  I could use a laugh today.    On top of the dog, I've thrown out something in my lower back and didn't make it to the doc myself due to dealing with the dog issue.  My shoulders, neck and legs all have a slight numbness.  Damn, I'm falling apart here all at once.

Dog appears to be doing fine.  We are giving him broth mixed with pedialite by syringe every 15 minutes, actually my wife is.  I can't hardly move without it hurting.  I shouldn't even be taking time to type this.

I remember someone, I think Julie, talking about every dog she takes in to train has one thing that their entire day seems to be centered around.  Bow's "one thing" is eating whatever he can fit in his mouth.

I thought I had gotten rid of all the tiny items he could swallow like that, but apparently the kids brought more home.  They are gone now.  I never had the combination of a dog living inside with kids.  It's almost worse than keeping ahead of the kids when they were babies.

Days like these a person has to remember all the things they have to be thankful for, and I've got plenty.

Update:

Bow seemed to be doing much better yesterday afternoon.  He had started to perk up quite a bit, but still didn't want to eat the chicken and rice my wife cooked for him, as per our vet.  In the evening he did pass some sort of cloth material that was pretty coarse, so I expected everythign to pick up from there.  Then late yesterday evening he was able to hold down quite a bit of water, but didn't really want to move around much.  In fact, he wanted to stay in his kennel.  That worried me.

This morning, he still had no desire to eat and didn't really want out of the kennel.  I called the vet and we brought him in first thing.  The vet and myself could feel the little ball, but he doesn't act like he's tender in that location at all.  He is tender in another location though.  The vet is convinced he has something else in there and that the little ball should have passed with no problem.

He should be in surgery in about 30 minutes.   I've never had to have surgery on pet, so I'm definitely worried.  I think we have a very good vet, so everything should be OK.  Hopefully it will be fairly simple and the recovery time will be short.

If your asking how we could have let him eat whatever it is, I'm already kicking myself.  I don't know when or how he had the time away from me to eat something that significant.  Maybe I'll know more when we find out what it is.

Hobbes,

Don't beat yourself up over it. %&*$ Happens...you can only do so much. I too tried to supervise my dogs "as much as possible", 75-80% of their time is spent in a 5x10 enclosed kennel on concrete, yet they still find time and ways to get into trouble.

On another note, while I was training Maverick this morning, I noticed he was swollen a little bit under his left eye. I checked under his lids for foreign material, but found nothing. My wife just called and said he is a lot more swollen on the left side of his face. I have a 3:30 PM appointment at the vet to investigate further.

I hope your pup comes through with no problems. When Maverick got his rock removed, he successfully ran his CPR test just two weeks later. I'm sure your pup will make a quick recovery.

The surgery went good. The only object was the ball, but it had done some damage to the intestine from the stomach to where it was located. Both vets looked him over for other objects and felt that they did not need to remove the damaged section. The vet warned me of all the possibilities if the damaged section doesn't heel correctly due to blood vessel dammage, but he ended with " my gut feeling" is he'll recover fine. They are keeping him at least one day and maybe another.

Sounds reasonable that the soreness was the damaged area that the ball had already passed through. I'll worry about him, but am glad they are keeping a close eye on him.

Great news!

Sounds exactly like what happened to Mav. Rock was lodged about 1' into the small intestine. It was damaged, but they left his intestine intact and he fully recovered. I'm sure the same thing will be true with your pup.
