My son who recently returned from 2 tours in Iraq, thought he was doing something good by "rescueing" two black lab pups that the owner was going to shoot.. (He knows how I feel about labs) He picked them up yesterday..and brought them to my house tonight.. we picked 138 ticks off of these pups..my guess is 70% of them were deer ticks..all in various stage of blood sucking... the owner of the pups (before my son) said they were 7 weeks old.... no way..these boys are 12 weeks or better..they are lethargic, and could give a **** who is around...or whats going on..I found multiple scabs on these pups that indicated that they have been scrathing for along time in their short lives.. Worst part of this story is when I asked where he got these pups..he told me..this is a guy I have known for 20 plus years..(No its not any member of the APLA) I broke out my stash of frontline plus, and heart guard, and gave my son a lesson on what he was going to face in the future with these pups.. I'm ready to drive north about 45 miles and give this ex friend a piece of my mind..

That is sad.

Just wondering if giving heart worm meds before testing is the right thing to do.

Kwick hit it- Heart worm test 1st- Then a month of Doxy for the tick born stuff along with deworming. I would want to get that deworing done before bringing into the enviroment of home too and be very dilligent of picking up after them to try to avoid worm infestations in the soil at home.

Stu,

Good for you and your son for taking these pups in! I too 'rescued' a couple of lab pups a few months ago. They weren't in bad health and had been properly cared for, but they were destined for the pound if I didn't take them in. They are only about 4-1/2 months old right now, but they are showing promiising traits of becoming very good dogs (hunting and otherwise). Both very birdy and eager retrievers. One is even showing signs of early pointing on chukar!

It is appauling what some people will let their pets go through. You guys are doing the right thing. Hopefully their health is not too far gone. Good luck and keep us posted.
