Tom- People ship them all the time. I myself was afraid to ship them so actually passed on a sale or two because of that. It is largely a matter of preference I guess. I have heard that there is some small % of dogs that do die in shipment but do not know what that % is. If it was me- I would drive and get it,or fly out and take it back inside the plane with me and not in a cargo hold. Just me. BTW- Welcome aboard.

I just shipped 4 pups out, 2 to Washington, 1 to Michigan and one to Kansas. All made it just fine, some were more tired than others, but were fine. I used Fronteir and United, both took very good care of the pups, made sure they had water and were very careful with them all the way thru their flight. Frontier was higher than United, i also used a direct flight!!!!!!!! Barbara

Bottom line is there are rules and regulation to flying pups from point a to point b... If your buying a pup from a breeder that knows all the rules... your going to end up picking a pup up from the airport.. that is going to be no differnt than if you drove to Minn and picked the pup up...

I live in Mn.. and have bought two pups from Texas... both times it was too hot to fly them here...so someone had to make a road trip...

Right now the temps are cool and there should be no issues...

Tom, I am one of the buyers that Barbara sent a pup to. I am the one that she sent to Michigan. There were absolutely no problems. The airlines were more than helpful, understanding, and Barbara and Kevin were awesome. They informed me of all that would take place, where and how to pick him up, and what to expect. A good breeder will do all that. They will be understanding, helpful, and just as concerned about the puppy as you are. I was lucky, I used a great breeder, and they are wonderful people that have been more help than I could expect. The bottom line is if you have a breeder that is even half as wonderful as they were, there will be no issues. Hope this helps, Kenny

Thanks for all the info.....very helpful. I think the key to get me comfortable will be a direct flight and the breeder has agreed to drive a bit to make that happen. I have been browsing this site for about 6 months.....great site and look forward to getting more involved when my little guy gets here. I already have Julie's book and am looking forward to the "walk" Tom

I just got my pup also, and named him Jack. I am new at this too, and everyone that I have talked to is so helpful. The walk time is amazing. The bond that is developing is so cool, and watching Jack learn to get around, over and thru fallen branches, down fallen trees, high grass, his reaction to water the first time. I truly think its more enjoyable for me than it is for him. Kevin and Barbara were and still are amazing, they both told me that if I needed anything to just let them know, or if I had any questions, to give them a call. I cant wait to get more involved and meet all the wonderful people that use this forum. I am going to my first test in Michigan to watch and learn. I have been to UKC tests, but never this one. Anyway, just wanted to let you know that your not alone. There are a few more of us here that are doing this for the first time. Thank you all for being so understanding, helpful, and welcoming.
I look forward to meeting you all.

I am getting into the PL's for the first time also. It's a long wait since the litter of our deposit has not yet been bred. Our pup will also be from here in Mn out of Sauk River. Who is yours coming from Tom? We will also be attending our first APLA event this weekend. The guys from MNPLC have been very helpful and looking forward to meeting them.

We've had two puppies shipped to us, both times no problems. Our last one was shipped from Seattle to Omaha, with an hour layover Minneapolis. On the plane at noon in our arms at 8:00pm, was I a nervous mom, a long flight for a little one! Our breeder, Tiger Mtn. did a great job "packing her up". Here's what they did, which I thought was excellent: they put about 2 inches of puppy pads topped with a baby blanket on the bottom of her crate, they also used the plastic water cup that attaches to the crate door but they froze the water before they put it in the crate, she still had water and ice when she arrived. They taped her food to the outside of the crate in a ziplock so we, or if necessary someone else, could feed her. Our name, address and cell phone number was clearly labled on the outside. But that said, if you ship plan on bringing a clean ready to go crate with you to transfer the pup into when you get to your car, the one your pup comes in may be too soiled to use, bring bowls and water and unless you live close by the airport, look for a place to safely air your pup asap as you go into the airport. Also the airlines won't ship if it's too hot/cold so communication is the key on ship day.

Enjoy your new pup!

once again...great info....many thanks. I will have the breeder create a little "Ritz" room for my guy. My pup is out of a small breeder in Minn who used Holzinger's Baker and his dog Pearl who is out of Tiger Mtn. with Raider lines......should be a good family dog that also likes to hunt hard in the fall....REALLY looking forward to it. Thanks again to all, Tom

You can have them brought to you by ground transport. $200 a puppy from door to door, a pretty good deal. I have shipped dogs this way, no puppies as of yet but will be doing this later this fall with a pup that I have coming for Las vegas out of a female that I bred and sold. The female is being sent to him on the same carrier

Wow Kenny thank you for the compliment! We just want to have these pups go to great owners such as yourself! They only live a short life, so it should be with somebody who really cares for them! Kevin

I've had several pups shipped from the east coast to Colorado. Though they undergo some stress, I have never had a problem. The funniest one was my 10 wk old Pyr pup shipped from Ohio, to Georgia and then on to me in Colorado; this was a trip that lasted over 10 hours. Apparently, he barked for the whole journey. Louie was not a happy camper when he arrived at DIA, but quickly acclimated to his new home and life.

Would I do it again? I would have no reservations.

In the summertime shipping puppies is very challenging. Some airlines ship no pets in the summer. Check your airline. The last 8 week+ pup I shipped in the summer was delayed nearly 3 weeks due to a requirement that, although an early morning flight, the highest expected daily temperature, as comfirmed by the airline in advance, must be less than 85 deg at the departing, intermediate, and receiving airport for the shipping reservation to even be made. Check the airlines-closely.

When I moved to Oregon I couldn't round my cat up in time for the road trip - so my buddy shipped her the next week and Delta lost her! They claim that she freaked out when the engine started as they were walking her on the tarmac and broke her crate. My buddy spent 2 months baiting tomohawk traps with tuna fish and posting signs and she never showed up. Delta hasn't helped at all yet with reimbursements. Losing the cat sucked but losing the dog would be horrific. If I ever fly my dog, I'm going on the same **** plane and I'm going to board it unti lI watch them load her up. And a puppy isn't flying unless it's on my lap.
