| Thanks to everyone who helped plan, judge, and run the test. Very nicely done. I got my first taste of running masters and although I was done early I learned a lot and saw some nice dogs. |

| Tyra had a great day in the upland. She didn't run as nice as she has on the water but it was a little different water than she was used to.
Stu thanks for the pics however the first two on the water are of Buck.
Thanks all! Hopefully I got four ready for master this fall. Tyra will be back to finish her GMPR
Thankyou Santafa labs for trusting me with such a fine retriever. |

Brad, congratulations for the MPR title on Tyra. What a cool bit of information just came to mind. I saw the same picture on RTF just now. It seems Tyra has a precocious 6 month old pup by Roux that has jammed two AKC derbies in a row. Double Wow! |

One thing that I meant to do on Saturday was take a picture of each series from the line and then post it like Wendell did for the MO test. Somehow the camera never got out of the truck. I really liked the Master land and water series - I'll try to use my artistic abilities (ha ha) to see if I can draw them up from memory.
One nice thing about all the setups this weekend: there were lots of first-time visitors at the event, and the gallery had an excellent view of everything. The clouds vanished, and it got a little warm in the upland field towards the end of the day, but otherwise the weather was perfect.
We had a lot of last-minute changes to the running order, which is why it didn't get posted prior to the test. As soon as I get a chance, I'll try to post the running order and the results.
The help we had on Saturday (and for setup on Friday) was incredible. NO birds were missed in the upland field. A lot of people from the MN Pointing Lab Club put in a lot of time to pull it off, and everything went very well. To Jay, Tim, Doug, Layne, Mike, Darin, Larry, Dan, Stu, Stew, Myron, Curt, Cory, Mark, Victoria, Lynn, and everyone who I've missed - thanks for doing an awesome job!

Before I start my ramble, great work done by the judges and the MN PL Club for putting on a well organized event. Major congratulations to all those who passed, way to go!
Even tho our trip was disappointing (Zeke’s water blind was a crash & burn), I had a blast on my first road trip with the “Michigan Mafia.” Simply put, the dudes from the “MM” are hilarious, have great dogs, party like Vikings, and can ride shotgun with me anytime!
I am laughing as I write, but here are a few of the more memorable moments from our road trip that resembled one of the great road trips from my college days. Remember, we didn’t get lost, we were touring the Wisconsin countryside.
• Paco’s infamous story about sleeping at Dale’s house • Saying to Mark, “I remember my first beer too” • Playing our “theme songs” before our run • Listening and singing along to “trolling, trolling, trolling…Walleye!” • Getting hammered more than once • Cheering on WI graduates • Watching Duke run the entire upland field in 13 seconds • watching Mark start Duke in the upland field like the Indy 500 race

| Here is a diagram of the Water Series. (I'm no artist)
1. The blind was run first
2. A is the "go" bird, B is the "memory" bird
3. When the dog returned from the "memory" bird, C the "diversion" bird was thrown. |

Stu - better than I could do, thanks! I've seen quite a few Master
water series, and this one was unique - the shortest marks I've ever
seen, but a challenging setup. I thought Jim and Larry did a nice job setting it up. Here's explanation of Stu's diagram,
and my take on what I saw...
- The blind was planted at 95 yards if I remember right. The marks were considerably shorter, maybe 60 yards or so?
- The blind was run first, and then if successful, the dog was asked to
run the marks. The line to the blind was just left of the line to the
go bird. It would have been MUCH more difficult to run the blind as an
"under the arc" after the marks.
- "Bird A" in Stu's diagram is the go bird, "Bird B" was the memory bird, "Bird C" was the diversion.
- A huge factor is that the series was run in Larry's "Sedge Meadow".
The water was lunging water, about shoulder high on the dog. A blanket
of weeds stands about a foot out of the water. The birds were thrown
with a splash, but as soon as the duck hit the water, you couldn't see
the duck. The cover is why longer distances weren't required.
- The lunging water and weeds made handling interesting - dogs move
faster than if they were swimming, their visibility was hampered by the
weeds, and the splashing noise made it harder for them to hear a whistle.
- Trees all around the back of the pond, so the ducks were thrown against a wooded background.
- Wind was steady from right to left, about 10 mph.
- The line was up on a mowed path, with a short extended entry (maybe 10 yards) downhill to the water.
- The left shoreline was actually a dike and fairly straight. So it
was a "down the shore" blind, and the blind was planted about 15 yards
back from shore. Just left of where you wanted the dog to exit the
water was a lone bush - yet another factor to pull the dogs left,
along with the shoreline and the wind. All of the suction was to the
left on the blind.
Five dogs made it to the water series. At some point, all five wanted
to go left of the line to the blind, so the handlers had to work hard
to keep them on line. Four dogs ran the marks, and if I remember
correctly, only one handled. A fun series to watch, and I thought the
dogs and handlers did a nice job.

The land series was the first series of the day, and was a walk-up. As the handler and dog came out of the holding blind off-leash, when they got to a certain point, a duck call was blown, and the longer left bird was thrown first. After hitting the ground, the shorter right bird was dumped out. The blind was run after the marks.
- The wind was blowing from right to left, although this was in a bowl with trees, so it was very light and didn't seem to be a factor. - My guess on distances would be 90 yard blind, 85 yard left mark, and 60 yard right mark? - The left bird had a distant wooded background, the right bird was thrown with a dark wooded backgound. - The left mark was a left to right throw, with the winger station behind and left of a lone elm tree. The bird landed behind and to the right of that tree in a small patch of short cover. Some of the arc on the left bird was obstructed by the tree. - The right bird was thrown so that the line to the bird was directly down a fairly steep hill. The left bird and blind required the dog to navigate that same slope, falling off left-to-right. - Lots of brushy cover between the line and the left bird. The bird was thrown so that if the dog ran a direct route to the bird, they went through a slot in the cover. If the dog veered right or left of the direct line, they were penalized by having to go through the brush. - Both marks both provided suction on the blind. A lot of the dogs wanted to fall off the hill towards the right mark early, and then pulled left towards the old fall as they got closer to the blind. The blind was planted slightly back into a slot with trees to the right of the bird and a bush to the left. - Again, a well-thought-out series that was fun to watch. |

It's fun to work a test and be out in a winger station as you get a completely different perspective on the condictions and factors then from the gallery. Sorry Mark that the video isn't quite ready for TV!
Filming either tests of your training days is a great means of going back afterwards and seeing just where you did something right or wrong. It's a great learning tool! |

| Thanks for filming Duke. Maybe not ready for TV but I sure enjoyed watching the video. Duke looked like he was running hard and fast, but when standing at the line it seems alot slower. The video really puts a different perspective on it. Thanks again Mark. |

Darin, nice job.As stated it does give a whole new look.We can certainly learn to read what's going on better.I noticed the shot in the distance. Also noted that Mark is a darn good student of the game. He squared the dog up(he's a young dog still learning),I was impressed with that. Also tried to keep him tight to the line, and did that very well.-------Slow down, just a tad, son. Pops--- PS(Thanks) |
