A few weeks ago, I got my first photo of a goose in flight. It left a lot to be desired and ended up processed to a black and white. It was a start though. This evening, I was planning on taking some photos of Gunny retrieving in a local sand quarry but used my longest lens in hopes of "other" possibilities. Just as we were leaving a pair of geese circled close enough to snap a few photos, and I was confident they were much better than the last. I found out later the best part was one had a band.

Jim- Since the res is probably very hi on the orig pic and you are likely reducing to maybe 10% to post-how about going in and doing a crop on the orig pic around that banded leg and lets see if we can read it !

Since 99+% of the photos taken are intended for use in my Website, they are taken in jpeg format. I don't need high resolution for 100-200 KB photo files. Also, when you crop jpeg you loose resolution.

The ideal format to shoot photos in is RAW because no resolution is lost when cropping. However, RAW files are HUGE compared to jpeg and I'd need to upgrade my computer to be able to work that way.

Therefore, the original when cropped shows nothing but the band's outline and color. I did get a photo earlier in their path, but they were shadows in the setting sun....which produced a dark image. I cropped that one and made it black & white. There was enough resolution to show the opening in the band facing out. So even if the photo had the proper resolution, the engraving would be unreadable.

Here's another picture in the flight sequence and the tight crop effort with very low resolution showing the crimp line in the band.

I take all my photos at full res- each pic is roughly a 3 meg file with my 7mp camera. Then I reduce and rename only the ones I will email or post up. This way if I decide to print something I have the resolution avaialble to make true photo quality prints at least up to 8x10. You are right-it takes up a lot of disk space- So i got a usb hard drive that I will
occasionally just dump to to clean up the hd space. That is really cool catching a pic of that band in flight!

Those are awesome shots Jim! Kiind a like catch and release. I hope you get an opportunity to call in the numbers on the band this fall.

I know you've posted it before, but what style and brand of camera are you using?

The gear list as of now is:
Canon EOS Rebel XTi
Tamron 17-50mm F/2.8 LD Aspherical
Canon 28-135mm F/3.5-5.6 IS USM
Canon 55-250mm F/4-5.6 IS

The Rebel XTi has a lot more "bells and whistles" than I'll ever need. However, quality photographs are more a function of the lens. I can't afford the really high quality lenses, but the three I have are about the best in the "less expensive" category.

There is a hollowed out old tree at my parents house that a hen wood duck uses as a nest. We arent for sure if its the same hen but she has returned to the same tree for the last 5 years. This spring she returned again and i havent seen her yet. but my dad told me he seen her sitting on the edge of the entrance to the tree and she now has a band on her leg. I am gonna try and get some pictures if I get a chance. Now that she has bands i would love to know where she was captured and banded. But she has become part of the landscape so i have no entensions of harvesting her next fall.
