I'd like to get some feedback about onging health for my pup.  He's about 12 months old and had regular shots from the breeder's vet and also the recommended shots from a local vet.  Since reading the post about neutering I now feel the need to research before accepting the advice of my vet.  So......please give me your opinion about the following tests/shots:

- lyme disease prevention shot
- fecal test for worms
- blood test for worms
- bordetella (sp?)
- rabies
- distemper
- annual checkup/exam by the vet

In addition, I plan to give him a monthly dose of heartgaurd plus for six months and frontline plus for three or four months.  Are these annual shots and tests?  Am I not listing something I should consider?

Thanks!

Another thing you might check into is Leptospirosis.  My vet said that he didn't see a case for a long time, but has seen quite a few in the last few years.  You can vaccinate for it annually, but it's probably only a good idea if it's prevalent in your region.

OK... maybe you can provide some quick-n-dirty insight for us here Doc.... you certainly seem to subcribe to the "minimal vaccination" school of thought. Being fairly ignorant to the whole thing, I kind of took the other approach (I also have been very uncertain of where I might be moving to next, etc.). Basically, vets seem to recommend a more "protectionist" approach. I realize this is probably just to cover their ass. But... what harm is done in just vaccinating for everything - every year? I know there are compelling reasons, I've just never been given a good answer. Is it because over-immunization leads to the evolution of vaccine-resistant diseases? Or simply because you risk immediate side-effects with your dog? Could "over-protecting" actually make the dog more succeptible to different diseases? Just trying to education myself.

Matt, millions of dogs have been vaccinated every year for everything and been just fine-but they don't really need it. The current official veterinary policy is to vaccinate pups with 3 or 4 boosters, vaccinate dogs at a year of age, and then vaccinate on a three-year interval after that. Dogs can have reactions to shots-allergic reactions, mostly, but I know that cats can get tumors from their rabies vaccine. People get vaccinations when they are babies and kids-and that's it for their lives, except for tetanus. It is a two fold problem. The research has not been done to follow a large number of dogs throughout their lives and to continually check the titers in their blood, which is the level of antibodies for a certain disease, to know how long the vaccines are effective for-and vaccines are a huge business for the manufacturers and for veterinarians. That does NOT mean you are being screwed over for the money. It just means that changes requiring lots of research that will result in less revenue are slow in coming. There are people out there that will tell you all kinds of horrible things will happen to your dog if you continue to vaccinate it-and the science is just not there yet for that to be national policy.

An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.

Alright two more questions.....

Is Benadryl safe for dogs?

Can dogs get poison ivy?

Took my pup to the vet today to get a lyme booster shot.  I also noticed a few scrapes/sore and the tech said that it might be posion ivy or just could be scrapes from running through brush, etc.  On a side note...I did get poison ivy while walking with the dog through the woods at the lake.

Is this a little pup? I went thru similar with my pup when he was real small (9 weeks) and we were taking walks intough cover- I SAW the poison ivy! Lots of it we ended up in. Vet told me that dogs do not get poison ivy- the small rashes were just minute scratches that got inflamed and had minor infections. They went away quickly and he also quickly outgrew all this nonsense as he got a little older. BUT be carefule as YOU can get the poison ivy off of him if the plant oil is still on him!

Ruby gets poisin oak out here in Oregon. If we run in an area with poisin oak she will get bumps and blisters on her head, back, side, legs and stomach that will last about a week. She scratches at them as they itch her... We give her childrens Benadryl and try to keep her from scratching and it goes away.... I watch my contact and the kids closely to make sure we don't get it.....

Lord may I be half the man that my dogs think that I am!

Jack is just over one year.  I got poison ivy on my arms and legs.  I'm thinking the spots on my arms are from touching Jack.  He has small spots....looks almost like scrapes.  on his neck, chest, and legs.  Gave him a bath tonight and scrubbed him up real good.  going to go give him a dose of benadryl right now.  Thanks for the help.

Well after the bath last night I started thinking that the best thing would be to take him to the vet.  Brought him in this evening and they ran tests on the skin.  Turns out he has a bacterial infection.  So he's on meds and I have to give him a few baths with special shampoo.

Have no idea how he got that and didn't really get much of an answer.  Anyway, appears that we have it figured out.
