I took Trigger out for our walk today and before we went I stopped by a game farm and picked up some quail.  I tried to get some bob white however, the guy said he looses 5 for every one that lives so he stopped raising them.  The next best thing the guy had was some type of Japanese quail and he said they would fly fairly well.  I should have taken that as they will not fly more than once.  I bought 4 of them and continued on my way.  Long story short I took Trigger out of his crate and threw a couple "happy bumpers."  I let him smell the bird and when he wanted to grab the bird I let it go.  It flew and he followed.  The bad part is he caught the bird shortly after it landed.  We were in some fairly heavy weeds and sage brush so I thought the bird would have a chance.....WRONG!!!!  So I took the bird from him and did not release another one.  I thought maybe they were a little dizzy and confused from sitting in the box.  I opened the box and went on the walk.  I came back and only one of them had left so I thought I would try it again.  Same results.  I guess these birds are not the ones to use.  My delema now is where do I get some birds?  This guy is the only game farm in the area.  I will expand my search and see what I can find.  Trigger did seem to understand the whole process.  During the walk we jumped some quail and instead of not even noticing them he would stop and watch them fly away and look at me.  It was almost like he was asking for permision to chase them.  Anyways, just thought I would post my experience.

Joel,

The prison over in Walla Walla has birds for sale.

Contact Pat at Shadow Mountain Labs. He gets tons from there.

Thanks, I appreciate the information.  I will do that.  It is a bummer when the birds ya need are not readily available.

Can't you find any wild pigeons around farmer's silos or grain elevators or 'MacDonald's' or feed stores to catch?

Try Dale Davis in Deer Park, WA. 509-276-8661 7:00 A.M. to 9:00 P.M. PST

If he can't tell you where to get birds (bobwhite) he can help you learn how to raise them and use them.

If you can't find "game birds" that will be flyaways, you should definitely go to pigeons.
