Kevin, thats your call, they are your pups... I've done two benifits both for local's that have had cancer and needed to pay their bills. Both silent auctions we had a lab pup that raised more money than any other item up for bid... |

| I am new to this forum. I am also new to APLA. I used to own a business that booked hunts around the world, and was asked numerous times to donate hunts. With the hunts, it was safe, for the most part. I mean someone bidding on a hunt, knew what they were getting into. When you donate a pup, you have no idea where that pup is going. Unfortunatly, not all hunters, or duck hunters are the type of people that should have dogs. As a breeder you are very particular about who you sell to, and who gets one of your pups. I would be weary about donating, even though it is for a good cause. Just my opinion, I hope it helps. |

I've been asked before as well Kevin and I chose to pass for many reasons that krt9915 has stated....also impulse buys often happen....too many drinks/beers egging on by peers etc.

| As they are growing and changing every day and their personalities are coming out. We are going to find it hard to give a pup for an auction. We have made sure we had a good breeding and that the pups are going to good homes. We are not in control of that when a pup is auctioned off. If you take great care in the whole breeding process why not see it to the end and make sure you are doing the best for the pup? IMO |

I have had to help find new homes for a couple of auctioned dogs that the buyers had more money and booze in them than time. I would never donate a pup that way..... Now I would donate a pup to a deserving person that I knew would appreciate it, love it and train it. Back when we were breeding GSPs we gave a number of pups away to friends. Each one was loved every day of their lives and well cared for. I won't put a pup in a situation where I am not confident they will be well taken care of and loved. Best of luck with your decision. If (and that's a big one) I were ever in a situation where the "need" to give a puppy arose, it would never be for a raffle.
It would be through the HRC Youth Retriever Program. Essays are sent in by youngsters explaining why they would be a good owner. There has to be an adult sponsor who will assume the responsibility of mentoring the winning applicant.
A Labrador puppy given away under these conditions is going to have a huge advantage because 1) the owner WANTS the puppy, 2) the parents have planned for it and given a lot of thought to the idea, 3) training is part of the deal and 4) everyone involved becomes a winner (including the pup).
Most of these these pups go on to title and hunt for a very young future owner, trainer and hunter. Here's an example of a "winner" from the latest HRC magazine.

Kevin:
If you decide not to donate a puppy to DU for auction and you still want to contribute something you might consider putting together a training package to donate. It could include so many hours of training at your kennel for dog and owner. I did that several years ago for a Pheasant Forever banquet and it worked out well. I made it very clear that the training package was for dog AND owner not just the dog. What was covered in each training session was negotiated depending on what the dog needed, for example obedience, steady to wing and shot, pointing work, etc.

Money will buy you a pretty good dog, but it won't buy the wag of his tail. |

Another way to do this is to agree to donate the value of one pup to the Chapter. You still sell the pup in your normal manner and just donate the $$ for use by DU. That way you retain control to ensure that the pup gets into a good home and the conservation organization gets the much needed $$ for habitat. This is what I would do if I were breeding now. Pat

| If you know who is in the chapter, I would have no problem donating a dog to a dinner. As the former State Chairman for New Jersey DU, I have seen many dogs get donated to the dinner. I even have one that has a dog every year and people come from around the state and others to get a chance to bid on the dog. They are usually people looking for a dog and want the right off to go along with it. The chapter chairman is a dog trainer and the people know the dog comes from good breeding. I have seen dogs at this particular dinner go for as little as $1,200 and as high as $4,000, not bad for 10 minutes work. True, the ability to buy (ego) and booze sometimes comes into play, but more often than not it is some guy there with his kids looking to get a dog and he can't let his children down. I doesn't hurt the it is usually a blond, pre-teenage girl carrying around a small bundle of fur that is asleep half way thru the dinner. That same girl is missing her Sammie right now, so I can't go to any dinners with a dog or I will end up buying another dog. If you trust the dinner, donate the dog, its great for Ducks Unlimited and its great for our enviroment. Bucks for the Ducks. |

| I guess I should chime in since I sit on the board that asked Kevin. I fully understand the reservations. I liked the idea of a contract to the buyer. I said that I would take the dog if the buyer decided that he/she could not handle the new pup. This would allow me to find a home, if my girlfriend willl let the pup go. It is a tough decision and I respect any one that chooses for the pup. However, DU is very careful how they opperate and I am sure they would be willing to work with you to ensure you are comfortable. Any way you decide I am good but I do hope you still show up for the dinner. Good luck this weekend!
As an edit; if you have a buyer for the pup, I would defenitly go with that first. |

| Kevin I know of a pup that was donated to the RMEF Pueblo chapter this year and I did have a hand in it. I made sure that it went to a good home that will hunt the dog and make sure it got good training. You know the trainer well and I have one of his dogs my self. so I think that if you make sure of a few things it is a great way to get money raised for a great cause. If you would like to talk with me about it let me knopw and we can make arrangments. |

| Ive been to a couple DU banquets that have had pups donated and the bad part i noticed at the ones i was at was the pups didnt bring much interest to buyers and were usually bought by people that didnt really care about the dog but just wanted to keep things moving. its a good cause usually but can go both ways. |

| Thanks for all the advice. We have called UKC and are dealing with them now. It's a good program and one we feel comfortable with. They will make sure that Kevin gets to help train the dog also. Barbara |
