Everyone knows that labs shed. My dog Cady, however,  seems to be wanting to make a rug. I've been feeding her Natural Balance, due to its lack of corn meal and flour. She seemed to be scratchy before I changed over from Nutro and Iams, and several people told me that there is a propensity for labs to have corn related allergies. She gets 3 omega 3 pills a day, and dethatched with the furminator on a regular basis, but still she sheds an amazing amount. I keep telling myself that perhaps its because she is from a midwest breeder and has a longer coat for the cooler weather ( I'm in California), but maybe there is more to it.

Is this normal, or should I be considering a new diet or supplement?

Fish oil concentrate (anchovy, cod, clupea, haddock, mackerel, pollack, salmon, sardine, shark, sprat).

This is a softgel supplement marketed under the brand name Member's Mark from Sam's Club. It contains 1000mg fish oil, EPA 180 mg, DHA 120 mg. I have a number of friends who also use this product.

As a side note, it is only recently that I reinstated the supplement- maybe a week or two. She was shedding like mad prior to that. Also, I have been told by a breeder of Golden Retrievers to use a tbsp or two of olive oil as a supplement. Any validity to that?

Doc, I know you are a believer in a certain brand of kibble- somehow, the name escapes me. Does it have corn as an ingredient?

1. It might or might not be a good product. Does it say anything on the label about being Molecular Distilled? (or Pharmaceutical Grade?). Is your dog getting any Vit E in addition to what's in the food? 2. Ideally, it should be a 2 : 1 Ratio of EPA : DHA. 3. It can take up to 90 days (usually less, but not always) 4. Good idea (if/when needed). 5. I feed Eagle Pack Power Formula. It does contain corn, but Eagle Pack makes quite a few "holistic" foods as well (without corn). Go to www.eaglepack.com .

Doc,

To answer your question about molecular distillation, no. There is a posting that claims that this product has been purified to remove mercury, dioxins, and PCBs. Don't want to pay for any of them!

Same with the Vitamin E question. Sounds like I should get some.

Any validity to the corn based allergies?

1. Where is the posting? Or what is the URL or website where that is stated? There can also be a big problem if the fish have been chemically preserved during shipment to the factory or if the fish are just frozen . . . . . . . . . . 2. Pay for what? I'm not following. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 3. You need to protect the 'double bond' of the fatty acid from oxidation (peroxidation) which turns the oil rancid and produces free-radicals. 100 units of Vit E per 1000 mg Fish Oil. 4. A few dogs actually have a corn allergy. More have a wheat allergy. If your dog isn't allergic or hyper-sensitive to corn, then it is (when properly processed) a fine ingredient. .
