04/08/2008 8:22 AM Alert
So I picked up my pup in mid Febuary and I spent a lot of time looking for the right way to start my pup.  I read a lot and heard a lot about this book by Julie Knutson and something about a walk.  I honestly doubted the whole "theory" of the walk.  I believe this was due to the lack of knowledge on my part.  Anyways, I decided to buy to book and I have since read it four times and I am working on the fifth.  Ok, now I will get to the point of this posting.  I have done the walk religously for the past 6 weeks.  I have nothing to compare it to but, the responsiveness of my pup is mind boggling.  I took him to the park and recieved numerous comments on how well behaved my pup is.  I am simply blown away.  I have followed the book to a "T" so far and I will continue to do so.  Thank you for making this information available Julie.  I am not sure were I would be without this helpful hand.  The only problem is that he does not like to venture out to far away from me (10-15 feet).  However, I have feeling this will change next week when we go through the introduction to birds phase.

Thanks,

Joel & Trigger

Considering the fact that Julie is married to a Norsky, she turned out pretty good afterall.

Also, if you ever get to the Colville/Chewelah area, let me know. We have a small local training group (lots of different breeds) and there are some of us with PL's. We'd love to have you join us in training if you get to this area. Also, there is a good probability that Julie will be putting on a seminar here next year ! !

Thanks Doc. I will let you know if I get up in the area. I am going to try to get to Burlington Ranch next month. Hopefully, I will get the time off and be able to meet you and some others. I would love to attend a seminar with Julie speaking. Thanks again.

Joel,

Congrats on your pup and also on discovering the benefits of "The Walk". I too am a believer! The benefits that come from it are too numerous to mention.

I've tried to explain it to others, but have been met with skeptisism and shrugs...Oh well...

Good luck!

To many to count indeed. Like I said I was once a skeptic however, I am forever greatful that I took the advice of people on this board that support Julie's book and training techniques. I get some flack from buddies and others that I have come in contact with but, I now know the true meaning and benifits of "The Walk." I also got a lot of flack for purchasing a PL and that did not stop me neither will the flack I am currently getting.

You're going to be very impressed with Burlington Ranch. Also, don't forget that Evan Graham is having a seminar at Burlington on July 25 - 26. Also, the Bird Gog Challenge at Burlington May 4th. .

Unfortunatley the "flack" over PL's never ends. Good dogs, good dog work, keeping your mouth shut and letting your dog's performance do ALL of the talking has worked well for me!

Wow, I hadn't seen this post, how cool! Thanks Joel for even putting that up here. I think it has been mentioned over the years on different forums that other trainers, at least pointing dog trainers, have put forth the benefits to time in the field with their pups, so it is a concept in various forms that has likely existed as long as people have had pups. The retriever folks have been way behind because they aren't the upland hunting types to the degree the pointing dogs are - of course. Anyway, I'm glad you've had it work for you, and you aren't close to being done yet. Birds will introduce a new set of things for you, it'll be a great ride. I just appreciate your taking the time to put that down here. And since I have ZERO Scandinavian of any sort in me, I see things fairly clearly.......

You are more than welcome Julie. I have this feeling that this green horn will be forever in debt to you for your ability and willingness to make such proactive information available. From the past 7 weeks of following your book, I would say it does not matter if you are upland or strictly waterfowl - anyone could benefit from this information even a simple companion. I have not been able to go for the "walk" everyday but we go out about 18-22 times per month. It is simply amazing and I could ramble on about how excited I am. My buddies laugh but, they just do not get it. I can not wait for the introduction to birds this next week. My first lab = the time of my life. Thank you so much.

I have worked with Paul and Julie for a number of years and am also a firm believer in "the walk". Although my interests have gone in the direction of a FT dog, I still did the walk with her before she went off to "boarding school" with Paul. By working with her on simple concepts, angling up and down hills, going over tough terrain and being part of a team effort, I think we built the beginnings of a partnership that I hope will blossom. It's also great exercise! I also do this with my Pyr pup (now 1 year old), though now he has to be on lead... We are quite the motley crew: 1 yo Pyr, 10 yo Lab and the mini Dachshund walking at Banner Lakes. This is Louie, Me, Athena and Jodi visiting in the mountains. Louie is now about twice as big, found his "voice" and outweighs me by about 20 lbs.
