Has this ever happened to any dog you know of?
Zeke and I, along with 3 of my hunting friends, went pheasant and chuckar hunting last weekend. It was a great day, and supposed to be our final tune up before the IL APLA test. Zeke was doing really well, especially holding point with a number of running birds.
About 3 hours into the hunt, all of a sudden Zeke started violently sneezing, throwing and shaking his head, and then rubbing his head into the ground. But over and over again, Zeke was obsessively sneezing. As he was sneezing, his right eye contorted and closed and his nose scrunched way over to the right side. At first, I thought Zeke was having a stroke. I was watching intently right before these episodes started and I did not see anything abnormal. When I looked into his nose, eyes, and throat, everything looked fine.
I got him backed to the clubhouse and immediately raced over to the emergency vet. They looked up his nose, and it was red and irritated, but they could not see anything. The vet assumed that something went up his nose but then came out. They gave him a number of different shots to help with the inflammation, then sent us home. The next day, Zeke was better, but still occasionally sneezing. I knew something wasn’t right.
Monday morning, I took off work and took Zeke to a specialist, one of the best Vets in the state if not the country. Zeke started sneezing again and he immediately scheduled an endoscope. The vet found 2, 2 inch weeds that had broken off in the back of his nasal cavity. Both weeds were relatively hard and about the size of 2 toothpicks. He pulled them both out with the endoscope, then flushed out the cavity with salene. Zeke is now back to normal.
Zeke was running in the field and a weed at precisely the right angle goes into his nose and breaks off. What are odds? I asked my vet, what are the odds? He said 1 in a gazillion, that he has seen it a couple of time, about 3 times or once every 5 years.
Has this happened to any one or every heard of a dog in which this happened?
Good news, Zeke is back to normal. Can you imagine how that would drive you nuts?

Wow! I'm glad to hear that you finally figured out what was wrong. I wonder what would have happened if you had not gotten a 2nd opinion and the weeds were left in there!
With all of the increased talk lately about grass seeds and weed seeds working their way into the dogs body cavities, I have had a few heart stopping moments this year with Maverick. Mav has kind of droopy eyes and I've fished more than one seed out of his eyes this year. I've also seen him have violent sneezing fits that indicate he has something up his nose. Scary indeed!
Glad things worked out well!

I think the odds are pretty high for getting "something" up their noses, be it a weed seed or grass leaf or something. There are frequent posts on the Refuge about things like this happening. A dog's nose is soooo long, that the offending substance is sometimes too far back to be seen with a regular Vet "nose looker" instrument.
If nothing is seen, and the symptoms persist, an endoscope is the only way to go.
If it had been "burrowing" seeds, it can get nasty in a very short period of time.

Mike that was a tough read.....at first. I see "Freak Accident" followed with "Zeke", and I could not read fast enough. Whew! I'm glad that got taken care of quickly.
Daisy had two surgeries from weed seeds. Taffey had a weed stem pulled out of her ear drum (punctured) on two different occasions.
This summer a friend of mine needed to have a "specialist" remove two weed stems from the nose of his dog. Unfortunately, it is not that rare in field dogs.
Good luck at the tests! |

Mike, Yes but not as severe. The worst time was with Tucker when he was 4 - 5 months old; but he sneezed the grass out. No dog of mine has suffered from retention of a seed as far as I know and none has required vet. attention.

Sorry Jim, I didn't mean to scare you!
I was really scared of foxtail barley, a really dangerous plant that actually "moves" further up the cavity with time.
Anyhow, I need to take a picture of the weeds, hard to beleive weeds that big could break off so far up the nose. But you are right, our dogs are exposed to all kinds of dangers doing what they and we love, retrieving and hunting.
One thing for sure, field and hunting dogs are going to encounter more injuries than Fido the pet. After Zeke's knee surgery, I got petcare insurance. Last year, Zeke ate and swallowed a corn cob, they had to do surgery. This year, a nasal endoscopy. The bottom line is that I will do anything to save my best buddy, so insurance (a 50$ deductible) has worked out great for me. I will forever have insurance on all of my dogs!
