POINTING LABRADORS The clear and unarguable fact is that the Labrador is a retriever, not a pointing dog. There may be a residual instinct to point in certain Labradors. That does not make the Labrador a pointing breed. It was bred for use as a retriever of game and in this country particularly, as a waterfowl retriever. There are any number of sporting breeds that excel at pointing upland game as well as flushing such game. The Labrador is not one of those breeds and should not be bred or sold to the public as a pointing breed. http://www.thelabradorclub.com/library/point.html What is this all about?

I dont think the Labrador Club has any business tell anyone what a Labrador can do or not when they reward a animal, call it a CHAMPION! and yet, would not know what to do with a bird, if it hit him in the face. Dont complain to us. We just let our dawgs do what comes NATRUAL

"The clear and unarguable fact is that the Labrador is a retriever, not a pointing dog."

They MUST be drinking again......the ONLY CLEAR unarguable FACT is that I can certainly ARGUE about ANYTHING, and ENJOY IT. The best part is when I get upset about it, and throw something, the pup can then go and retrieve it for me.

Hessian, The Labrador retriever club needs to get its head out of the Sand,It is just a club of people that twist everything to get there way! A few years back those little short british labs came in to the show arena and started winning all the time , so what does the LRC and the AKC do? They raise the standard height so they cant compete, Hmmm sounds like a club I want to be associated with! Besides why would we want a pointing dog when are dogs do that and everything else? Kevin

No owner/breeder that I know of is promoting the Pointing Lab as a pointing "breed". They are Labrador Retrievers and they are a retrieving breed, you'll get no argument from me on that subject. Therefore there is no breed standard that has been established as to what these "Retrievers" do in the uplands. Some Labrador Retrievers naturally flush gamebirds and some of them happen to point game birds. The "Pointing Lab" is simply a description of what these Retrievers do when they hunt upland game. Other than their instinct to point, they are pure Labrador Retrievers!
