Colorado Judges/Handlers Seminar - Thursday, August 21, 2008
A Judges/Handlers Seminar will be conducted at Haystack Ranch on Friday, 9/29 at 7:00 PM.

Fall Election for 3 Directors
There are three directors whose terms expire at the end of 2008. Those are Brice Romero, Stu Wange, and Joe Bubulka. It is unclear if any or all of them will run for re-election. We will have an election commencing in October. At this time the APLA is solicting for those members who wish to run for a 2 year term.
The requirements are to be a current member in good standing. You need to submit your nomination letter no later than September 20th. This letter needs to or should contain the following items.
*The office you are running for. Here it is director.
*Why you feel you would make a good director.
*Any goals or objectives for the APLA you would have if you were elected.
*Your length of membership with the APLA.
*Amount of and type of APLA officer or event experience as well as other dog organizations.
*Dog experience relative to titles attained, training, judging, hunting, etc.
*Your letter must contain your name, address, phone number, and email address.
*And lastly your letter must contain 10 current members who support your nomination and whose permission you have attained. List their addresses, phone numbers, and email addresses. (Double check this information for completeness and accuracy. Nine current members won't pass, it takes 10 members.)
The nomination letters need to be received not later than September 20th by Larry Kimble, 1112 Birdie Drive, Independence, KS 67301, 620-331-4066. No express over overnight mail requiring receipt signature. Also, email your letter to lkimble@cableone.net by the same date.

Revised Certified Pointing Retriever Rules - Thursday, March 13, 2008
Effective with the spring hunt tests the Certified Pointing Retriever rules have been revised. The revisions are in red under the Rules tab and Certified Pointing Retriever. The changes are in two areas. The first area is "Scoring" where an individual category score of 1 1/2 or lower will result in failure. Also, the total score is changed from 18 to 21 points. The second area is the change and replacement of the last sentence under "Point".

Holly Cart - new APLA secretary - Thursday, August 14, 2008
Due to Shawn Hoover's resignation as secretary, Holly Cart has accepted appointment to fulfill Shawn's term through 2009. This is per our by-laws. Holly was the runner up in the recent election to Shawn. Shawn will continue to be active in the APLA, but due to personal reasons he was not able to spend the necessary time that the secretary position requires

Online Hunt Test Registration System - Friday, August 8, 2008
MEMBERS STILL NEED TO MAIL YOUR ENTRIES TO THE HUNT TEST SECRETARIES!
On line entry of dogs by members is not yet available. This phase is for the hunt test record keeping only. This past Spring season, APLA successfully rolled out version 1.2 of our custom built Hunt Test Registration System (HTRS)! All Spring HT results are available on http://www.americanpointinglab.com/site/Dogs/tabid/108/Default.aspx.
In case you have not heard about our new system, HTRS is an online, password protected, application which will allow real time access to membership data as well as certification data. The following features and benefits were included in this release of the software.
* Membership information as well as certification information can be cross checked and updated in a prompt manner.
* Hunt Test Secretaries can easily enter test scores which will lead to quicker certificate generation.
* Improve the turn around time from Hunt Test Events to the results being posted online.
* New accounting reporting features:
> Ability to enter one payment to cover multiple entries.
> Refunds for scratch entries (if applicable).
> Create income summary report.
* Allow BOD Secretary to add/update memberships on line (mail-in only).
* Add bird count report enabling HT secretaries to keep track of birds.
* Enhanced Reports
> Alternate row shading for easier viewing.
> Input translation to ALL CAPs when HTS enters data all lower case or proper case so reports and HT Booklet looks uniform.
* Enhanced scoring for quicker certificate generation.
> Add owner name and address to score report.
* Enhanced judge's sheets program allows HT secretaries to print judge's sheets at once.

I drove out to Mineola, TX this weekend to meet up with Paul K. to drop off my pup. He is going back to see Julie for some training. Not sure how long he is going to be there, but I am defenitly going to miss the little guy. He has a ton of energy, so hopefully Julie can reel it a bit.
While I was in Mineola I got a chance to see Trips sire (Dusty) run, that was something to see. He is FAST! Seemed like he handled his run without any problems. He is quite a dog.
Can't wait to here back from Julie after she has a couple days to work with him, just hope it's a good report.
He is 6 months now, I'll post an pic soon.

| Our Sammie is with Julie now and by all reports doing fine. I know I sent her a "strong minded" pup, but Julie has seemed to have tackled that issue. I am sure she will do the same with your dog. I can't wait to go out and see the "little yellow bomber" in April and hopefully have her home in May, she is missed by all. |

| Mine has been out there since new years eve. Been getting good reports. Will be sending in the application for CPR test in Co shortly. The 1st week or so is tough as far as missing them goes. Now it has been so long ya wonder if they will even remember ya. |

| Our little guy has been out there for six months. When we finally do get around to getting him, he may not want to come back with us. For sure the first week is the hardest. I told Julie, it was one of the toughest things I have had to do in a long time putting him on that plane. He almost got kidnapped and brought back home, though I bet he is having alot more fun out there than these two at home are watching March madness with me. |

| One thing you all know, or I hope you do.....You picked one of the BEST trainers out there for pointing labs. Sit back and relax what you sent to Julie...and what you get back will be 2 different dogs...but what you get back will be beyond what you could ever have hoped for.. |

Sammie was 8 months when she went out in the middle of January, and by all reports she should be home in May. This may change as her training goes because all dogs are different. We were looking for a hunting/family dog and I believe that is what we will get. We have all the right breeding and the right trainer, so the odds are with us. I, or should I say Julie, will run her in the test at the end of April. I may be our there at the same time for my training, but we haven't confirmed that yet.
As for missing the dog at home, Coach is right, putting her on the plane was tough, but leaving her there was tougher. I went along for the ride when Sammie first went out there and met Julie. It is always hard to make a deal with someone you have never met except by internet, email and phone. I got burned on another situation before, so it won't happen again. I was also prepared to take her right home if I didn't like what I saw, needless to say Sammie stayed there with Julie. Julie is a wonderful person and took the time to answer all of my questions and the ones my family had for her, probably the same ones we asked before but she was very patient with me. Don't tell her I said all these nice things it may ruin the image of a tough Jersey guy. All in all the, Sammie is missed daily and I am constantly being asked when is the dog coming home, and the answer I can give is when she is ready, not the answer my kids and wife want to hear, but it is what is best for the dog. |

Not sure who actually wrote the book-but she did in fact model for the pics in it.  Of course we better be careful what we say cuz she does have possesion of all of our "turkey butt goober heads" at the moment.  |

| Seems I need to check on here more often! I tried to get some pictures on here but it said they were too big, so obviously I don't know what I'm doing with this one. I was going to put one of Sammie pointing beautifully until she lunged in to a family of field mice. I can't tell owners things like that, so it's just as well. I have a blurry set of pictures taken with my cell phone, which doesn't work when I'm in the field anyway, of 2BD's dog (shouldn't it be 3BD's now?) pointing so many times I quit taking pictures and got mad because he was screwing it up for the other dogs. There I was kind of mad because this dog was finding birds I needed other dogs to find - that's not a good reason, though he has also pointed field mice, just not recently...
Then there's the picture I got of Champ pointing a bird he was staring in the eye, one of those curled I-really-want-to-launch shots I don't like owners to see either. Too much pressure here guys, now these dogs are supposed to come out doing something and if I showed ALL the stuff, we would be laughing so hard I'd have no credibility whatsoever, even if I didn't write the book but did throw all the birds in it. And, to top it off yesterday the farmer leasing the western field burned his ditches and in doing so, burned the whole field, the higher grass field, my trees, my Johnny house filled with birds, our upper dry ponds, the upper grass field and almost got to the southern kennel and yards.
Fortunately all buildings and dogs and people are okay. The farmer across the river died trying to race the fire he started rushing his tractor through the ditch and having it turn over and pin him beneath. Talk about the worst of days. I went out and visited, well mourned actually, the now desolate spot where my Johnny house had been, nothing but some wire and pans left. I had those little guys working so well, so perfect for young dogs, always returning save those the hawks got. Five 100 year old cottonwoods are going to fall over here when they finally quit burning and there won't be much for any birds to hid beneath.
So yellow dog owners, new and old, and 3BD and everybody else, no more field mice hunting nearby for us, we'll have to go closer to the river and other places. We are fortunate all of us are safe and sound, and Kassidy was helping the firefighters the whole time, may have a new career in mind now except she really stunk when she came in. Dogs never were in danger but they wondered what all the smoke was about. I just can't get over my quail and their sad ending... I hate stuff like that.

Sorry to hear the news...that burning can be extremely dangerous. I burned my ditches a couple of weeks ago and I don't think I ever stopped stressing out! Sorry to hear someone died in the process of putting one out
