I sent a email off this morning to the writer from the "Journal" to see how things are going, here was his reply back.
Hi Stu,
Thanks for asking. I'm almost finished, and it's due to the editors by
Sunday night. My rough draft is about 30% too long, so I'm working on
reducing the size and smoothing out the wording to make it more
readable. All the pictures were sent to the editors a few weeks ago, so
that part is done.
Thanks to your help, I learned a tremendous amount about pointing Labs.
I wish I could write a longer story, because the 2000 word limit
doesn't allow me to include everything I wanted to say. I covered the
history of Labs in general and pointing Labs specifically; some
objections from AKC and misunderstandings by the public; breeding and
training; and hunting style. I've included quotes from Dale Merritt,
Julie Knutson, Shawn Hoover and Linda Oldham from the Labrador
Retriever Club, Inc. Hopefully it all comes together well.
The story is due to be published in the June/July issue of the
"Retriever Journal".
I still dont know for sure which pics will be included in the article, but I have a good idea
btw. the dog that has something in common with all 4 dogs picked for the article is "Raider"
I dont know why I dont have any spaces between paragraphs, I did when I wrote the post |

Cool!
Good for Raider! He sure helped to throw bird drive, hunt and point into my Meg. There were some other great genes that went into her as well to make her the hunting machine that she is, but the Raider is definatley in her "hunt".
Can't wait to read the article! Pat

| That narrows it down to over half the people on here. I was told by a PL "expert" not to breed my dog because he is out of Raider and "Raider produced dogs with 2 inch legs". LOL. After two breedings, no 2 inch legs yet! |

I'm not validating the claim of 2" legs produced by Raider, BUT if it is true, AND the mode of inheritance is appropriate, the result of two breedings doesn't confirm anything but that you're willing to play a form of "Russian Roulette."
I wouldn't be laughing until the fat lady sings.

Well, before this gets blown all out of proportion by a "but", Raider was bred to a very large number of bitches. With 500-600 pups on the ground, it is highly unlikely all were perfect. Linebreeding "experiments" are bound to accentuate any imperfections. Anyone in the breeding business understands this.
After talking to Cashman's this evening about Raider, I really think dropping the cryptic innuendo "but" in this thread was not necessary. |

Here is a copy of the pm I sent to one person who questioned what i meant today. I will leave them out of this respectfully:
Hello X, let me say this first. I would consider myself lucky to have a pup out of one of your dogs. "You" have done what I consider some very selective breeding and I have a great deal of respect for you. But I got the deer in the headlights look when I read that four pics of the dogs in the magazine were gonna be Raider dogs. Personally, if I was gonna do a article like that I would of picked a pic of a yellow, chocolate, and a black and maybe one extremely good action shot or something. Sort of a spread the wealth kind of thing...... My one hope is they do not go into the gene pool to much telling what dogs are what or we might see alot of idiots breeding any raider dog they can find to any boot polisher they can find..... you see where I am going.......... ;)
I think you will see I meant no disrespect ot the Cashman's and Raider. They are premiere folks and Raider is a hell of a dog. At one point I would love to have a dog with some "Raider in 'em"... But we all know how some folks breed with this $$$ instead of breeding with sense. So, you, the Cashman's and anyone who has or had a Raider bred dog you have my most sincere apology. Craig M. Frankly, I think it should be a celebration that any color of pointing Lab would be fine when featured in "The Retriever Journal".

Craig, the writer of the article has no idea of the pedigrees of these dogs. I was the one that noticed the common link.. the decision on what pics to post in the article has nothing to do with blood lines. but it has everything to do with the quality of pics that were subiitted..
I recieved and sent about 60 pics of pointing labs..4 were picked..how much more can I say??? |

I've had a chance to read a version of his article. I think Cliff, who is a setter guy I believe, did great justice to the PL's. He had a huge topic and had to get it down to some choice paragraphs, which had to be very tough. Remember he isn't writing for this audience, but for the huge retriever audience out there who believes this is a bunch of wannabe's messing up their good dogs. Not every picture is a son or daughter of Raider, and those dogs have other big named dogs in their pedigrees as well, so I don't see any reason for argument about that subject.
I don't know, I will enjoy seeing something written in a major publication that treats a controversial subject objectively and with true belief. I'm sure people will find something to grumble about, particular wording or something omitted, but step into his shoes and try that for the world. I applaud him.

Last update till the article is published. I got one more email from Cliff that kind of say's it all,
Hi Stu, Well, the article has been sent to the editors. I hope it's a fair and accurate article that does justice to pointing Labs - I tried my best.
I want to give you a final thanks for the tireless work you did in helping me research the story. I couldn't have done it without your help. The contacts you suggested and all the pictures you coordinated were invaluable.
I enjoyed speaking with each person I contacted and was impressed with both the passion they have for pointing Labs and how genuinely nice they were. Everybody was very generous about giving me time and information. It's clear there are some very fine people out there working hard to raise, train and promote great pointing Labs.
I wish the article could have been longer so I could've written more about the kindness, passion and enthusiasm for pointing Labs that you folks have. I believe PLs are wonderful dogs that suffer undeserved controversy. You all care about maintaining the traditional characteristics of Labradors just as much as the AKC folks and won't allow the pointing trait to ruin a dog you love. I also have no doubt that good PLs are as capable of staunch, stylish points as most dogs from traditional pointing breeds, and can still retrieve better than any other dog. I regret that I wasn't able to convey these things in the article as much as I wanted to because of space limitations.
Thanks, again for all the help - I appreciate it greatly.
Take care.

| Thanks should also go to Steve Smith, RJ Editor, who responded to my inquiry awhile ago, about a rumor that RJ was indeed going to do an article on PLs.He was gracious, and fun,and confirmed the rumor, sending contact info to the writer, and putting him in touch with a couple people I thought should be included in the research,,,,(and I'm an awful small fish, who just happens to be bold.)---------I'm thinking any major publication putting some unbiased ink about PLs,is going to be a good thing.Don't really care what pics get in.More concerned about the content.Hoping it shines a little enlightenment on a few more folks.
