My pup tore up her paw last night doing some training, so I took her to the vet this morning and she is going to need a few stitches.  He is going to put her under for just a little bit so I thought I would get her hips x-rayed at the same time...she isn't 24 months old until tomorrow!!!  One Day Off, I couldn't believe it, and what a crummy birthday present, she has a flat tire so she can't even do anything fun!!

So how hard is the anesthetic on them?

Rion, I have had both of my dogs put out for various reason and have not had any problems.  There is always a risk but I think the new methods of putting them out are supposed to be safer.  So the vet says anyway.   Sorry to hear about your accident.  Both of my dogs are a little groggy when they come home from being put out but they recover quickly.

hey Joe,
I'll make sure and give her a nice dried chicken strip tomorrow for her Birthday, I'll tell her it was from you. I have been in meetings most of the day so I haven't called the vet but he didn't call me either so I am assuming everything went ok, I'm leaving in a bit to go pick her up.

So, Rion, I guess this means you won't be coming to Chewelah to train on Sunday

What part of the foot was injured? Pad or somewhere else? If it was the pad, and the Vet advised suturing it, I'd find a new Vet. Pads don't suture well at all. If it was somewhere other than the pad, then I'm alright with it.

Hey Rion,

Two summers ago while running the dogs, my older lab sliced the webbing between her toes all the way up almost to where it met the pad. (broken beer bottle thrown and left by a careless fool). She reacted well to the anesthetic- and the vet was very careful not to error on the side of not quite enough rather than perhaps just a tad too much. She recovered well, and liked the extra attention she received. (although she felt the need to try and chew the stiches) I don’t think you will have anything to worry about.

Hey Doc,
Yeah I won't be making it up there on Sunday. It was in a weird spot, I really don't know what she caught it on as I didn't notice it until I took her out of her kennel in the evening after training. But I should have taken a picture of it, the cut is right above the pad, so it created a flap with the pad, it's about an inch long. The pad itself is ok, but it was the skin just above the pad and then the pad began to create a flap. Is that still bad to suture? I haven't changed the bandages to look at where the stitches are exactly but I will take a look at it this evening.

And yes, I do need another bottle of the Glucosamine. I'll print an order sheet and send it with a check!

Thanks,
Rion

Rion,
From what you describe, suturing was the correct thing to do. It's just that PADS themselves usually shouldn't be sutured.

Also, are you going to the SBDA banquet? If so, I can bring some Glucosamine to the banquet.
