| I see sometimes that folks selling dogs under 2 mention that prelim ofa has been done and maybe cerf too. How young of a pup can this be done to? Is it practical to do 6 or 8 week old pups as part of the screening process in selecting one or is this only a good indicator for an older pup?? |

| I think that most people wait until at least 6 months of age. I usually do mine before I start any training beyond basic obedience and force fetch. I don't know the medical theories behind this. |

OfA prelim's can be done between ages 4 months and 2yrs. The Offical rating is obtained after 2 yrs old.
OFA reports that a normal prelim will result in normal offical rating 90% of the time.
CERF can be done anytime after 6 weeks of age, and is good for 1 yr. There is no prelim for CERF. Either you pass and get a CERF # or not. |

If it is only being done for your own benefit, you could just have the CERF examiner TELL you the result of the exam and save the money for sending it in and also the hassle of filling out the paper work. (On a very young dog or a dog that is not going to be used for breeding.)
Similarly on the hips, I am lucky enough to have a Dr. that used to be on the OFA panel available. If it is just for my personal knowledge I can just have her look at the x-rays and give me her opinion and save the cost of sending it in for an "official" prelim. |
