Just went to the vet for the yearly check up / shots ect ect.
$171.50 later I am wondering if he is more expensive then most!

Here is the breakdown of charges:

39.00 Examination
16.50 DHPP Booster
12.60 Corona Booster
12.00 Bordetella Vac (cough)
23.90 Lyme Booster
14.10 Rabies Vac
40.50 Bloodwork (Heartworm and Lyme/Ehrlichiosis)
12.90 nail trim (i think this used to be free with the yearly checkup!)

Total=Ouch, but of course a healthy dog = priceless!

On the scale he weighed in at a lean 65lbs after 6 straight weekends of chasing them roosters! Studly Dude!!

Here's a breakdown of the cost for one dog:

  Office  call                            $    18
  Examination - Well Pet        $     17
  Heart worm test & fecal       $    17.50
  DHP-PV Booster                   $    18
  Leptovax 4 Booster             $     12
  Lyme Vac                             $     29
  Rabies  (3 year)                   $     28.50
  Kennel Cough Vac                $    16
                                           ----------------
                                              $    156

Multiply this X 4 by four. Every once in awhile I get a 15% discount. I'm sure why, but it must be a "number of dogs" thing. If I take more than one in at a time, I only get charged for one office call.

Then there is the type of billing that you don't expect & they add up quickly.

skin scraping                           $    26
in house allergin test               $    70
allergy/inhalent screen            $  210  (sent out)
+ food allergy panel                 $    50
plus the office call and exam    $    42.50
                                              ---------------
                                                $  398.50  "budget buster"

Hey, then there is the gas to and from the vet (60 miles round trip). How about Frontline and Interceptor monthly for four dogs? Why did you start this?

I usually take my first born and hand him over. Then if I need the nails trimmed I hack off my right arm and give him that also.

I pay $20.00 a month for a program, so it ends up being a heck of allot cheaper. Big discount on meds, check ups are free, break on emergency calls, stuff like that.

My son is accepted into the PreVet/Animal Science program for next fall at SDSU (South Dakota) so I got my fingers crossed that one day he may give me a good father discount. I just took one dog to the vet today and it was$76.75, to update all shots except rabies which wasn't due.
I was told that if I kept the dog on Heartguard year round that I wouldn't have to do blood test. Does this sound right?

Yes, if you keep you dog on Heartguard year round I don't believe that there would be any reason for an annual blood test.

We live in a small town and have limited services compared tot he city but.........

We just took in seven dogs in the other day. All had checkups and annual boosters, about half needed rabies, two had thyroid level checks. I think that the bill was about $280. Typically when I bring them all in they only charge me one office call.

You might ask your vets about a discount on the office call portion when you bring in multiple dogs at one time.

I don't think that I've ever walked out with less than $180 bill for anything. I love this vet, but man is he expensive. Then, while back home for Christmas, Allie got into some trouble and I had to take her to the local vet that I've known for years. The charge was $20 and included some medication! I am really close to going there for my yearly stuff since I go back often anyways.

Of course corn cobs don't count.
