I was just logging some dates in on my 2012 calendar and thought to myself... I wonder if there is a calendar somewhere with pics of various pointing labs? As a newbe here I wouldn't know where to look but I sure would love to have one with pics of labs on point.. Just a thought.

Art,

There is not one available but could be done fairly easy.  Just need a sampling of PL pics from the membership and it could  be created online.  Could even use it as a very very small fundraising opportunity for the APLA.

Just not sure how many would be interested for ≈$15/each.  Would need to know at least a couple dzn people would purchase to make the investment of time worth while.

I guess we can ask:

Who would be interested in a 11x17 PL calender?

I might even be willing to lead the project to make it all happen.

Shaun

I'd buy one and if it was a fundraiser for the APLA maybe even two.

How about making it a HOF dog calendar, showing off the Hall of Fame dogs.

Just my opinion.... I think people would be more apt to buy one with current dogs on it .... plus not sure how easy we would be able to get high quality photos of each of them ... I mean high resolution.

I'd buy one or more. Might help promote a little if we all get a couple and give one to friend or family. Or even a buddy with traditional pointers!

I think the calendar is a good iea
I just hope that the pics are not of dogs pointing birds right under their noses.
Those kind of pics make us a laughing stock. We need pics of dogs pointing at proper distances.

I think it is a neat idea. Now not to be a bummer but before any neat idea becomes a reality some poor sap has to put a bunch of hours into figuring out how to do it and do it in a way that most people are supportive of.

Shaun has agreed to be that poor sap (thank you Shaun).

Our board agenda is crammed full in January with current operating stuff. I would suggest if you want to move forward on doing something like this it needs two main things accomplished 1) a cost estimate on producing it at a printer/what the break-even is/ how many we have to sell. Also what resolution photos would be needed? 2) Who decides what goes on this calendar? This is where it normally gets sticky around here. Lots of very competitive people around here that want to see their dog and only 12 months in a year.

Some suggestions: Give yourself some time to get photos, like a few months. Most people dont pack around a full-sized SLR in the field and if you blow up pics you really need them to be hi-res and generally out of cameras that have a decent aperature. That would give people some time to get photos and not just limit it to the few that happen to have high-res pointing shots laying around. Try to limit the individual dog promotion aspect so it is really an "APLA" Calendar. This will make it go smoother to get people's acceptance. I would frankly even blind the dogs name in the pic from your vote so people are just looking at the dog, the pic, and not associating the titles or owener with it. Just some thoughts based on my experiences.

I guarantee you will sell at least 12 :-)

No just the people who post them and the trainers they promote.

Thanks Bruce, of course I realize its more than just grabbing 12 pics from my computer and putting it together and selling it as an APLA calendar. And I would, if approved by the powers that be to be pursued, make the process as fair as possible for the membership to be part of if they so choose.

That being said.......

No matter WHAT, the process and end results will never satisfy everyone and we all need to accept that!  An "APLA" calendar will/should, no matter who the poor sap that leads the task is, be comprised of pics of dogs doing what we as an organization should and need to promote, i'll just say that Doc touches on that above.  This will tickle some pink when pics of their dogs end up in the calendar and it will without fail, piss off/disappoint others (to the point some probably won't buy a calendar, stupid) cause their dogs pic did not end up in the calendar.  That's just something everyone needs to deal with, it's not about who's dog will be in it, it's about what the calendar will represent and promote.

VENT:
We all need to realize so long as the egos/kennel blindness/our personal preferences/etc continue to guide the way we (as individuals) choose to act and what we promote in terms of PL's we will never EVER grow or be highly respected in the greater dog world.  The dogs should guide us!  We should all be on the same team.....  TEAM PL (super corny end to my vent I know)

I would purchase several---maybe as many as 10. That's one of very few ways I could promote the PL here in the southeast (NC). There AIN'T many of us PL folks or dogs in these parts but I have lots of buddies in the retriever and pointer games that have looked hard at what the few of us have and what our dogs are doing, hunting and testing.

Possible look for calender: Cover could have HOF dogs noted by ????dog name, owner name??? The remaining pages contain multiple (2,3,4????) pictures on each page of dogs from various hunt test, noting only the hunt test and maybe the state.?.? I might or might not see my dog. May even see a dog that looks like mine and coooooooould proclaim, "Hey that's my boy".

Thanks to all that work hard to promote our PL world and especially for the support we're getting here in the southeast. We hope to get our 2nd annual PL test on board mid April here in NC---Ya'll come see us!!

Good ideas Keith. Might be able to promote the APLA with info about the organization on the back page ect. List the web site address, maybe able to print the test dates and locations. I know we dont know what and where the tests will be by the time the calendar would normally be printed. If one is done this year it may be worth consideration since we will know where the tests are by the time a calendar is made.

HA! Another reason to make test decisions more than a couple of months in advance :-)

All good ideas, I like doing a collage and showing some retriever work as well as just points to show versatility.

I would most assuredly purchase one or two.

Another thought to help to avoid ruffling feathers is try to include a number smaller photos on a back couple of pages. Might be able to get more dogs in that way.

I hope that it would include pointing labs both in the upland field and doing water work showing the great versatility that these incredible dogs have.

So here are a few thoughts related to this.  1st, you can have lots more than just 12 photos in a calendar.  12-14 big ones (individual months, cover, even 13 month cals) with lots of little ones (collage style) and with many companies you can have photos on individual days (i.e. holidays).  I like the idea of both pointing a retrieving shots (versatility is why we love these dogs).  Another thought is to have a vote for which photos would be on the calendar.  Yes, everyone would vote for their own dog.  Fine.  So heres how it works.  First of all photos are screened for quality, size, etc...  Then everyone gets 10-12 votes total.  A committee then tallies up votes and using their artistic ability and the photos voted on designs the calendar.  My wife has made a bunch of these with her photos and we recently did a calendar as a fundraiser for our local humane society where photos were submitted, screened, voted on and then a calendar was made.  It wasn't too painful.   I would volunteer to help Shaun out with this.

hey guys, great ideas but alot of these ideas/requests/suggestions turn what I envisioned as a fairly simple task to something much broader, complex and time consuming. I'm just a cheapskate with no internet access at home so something of the desired magnitude, as it seems many are looking for, is out of my capabilities given my internet access limitations.

This is starting to sound like something that would need to be started well in acvance of 2013 in order to have something for next year.
