So,we brought Kutya home today. Really amazing. He responded immediately to anti-biotic's. Thanks to the Lord and all your prayers. His cultures should be back by Thursday and we can fine tune those anti-biotic's. But these seem to be working well right now (4 quadrant, heavy duty). He appears normal, except for hopping up into Kennel (hesitates I am guessing because of some pain). He drank some water (good sign) and ate almost of his dinner. Next steps are to monitor progress via blood counts and X-rays. Then eventually (1-3 months) take him off anti-biotic's and monitor him closely for signs of re-infection. The seed that caused this can still be in him. Most likely it is. It can stop progress (or not) and basically a barrier would form around it to prevent re-infection. I must thank Paul Knutson so much for taking Kutya to Dr. Wayne Jensen. He really knows his stuff. I think a lot of vets would have just treated the external bruising and not investigated further. Wellington Vet ClinicPaul really saved Kutya's life for being so observant. Kutya would have been dead in a couple of days. For those of you more interested read about it here.. Pyothorax in DogsThanks again and keep those prayers coming! Vic |

Vic and Nancy,
Sorry to hear the bad news. Sounds like things are making a turn for the better. We will pray for Kutya and the two of you as well.

Excellent! Keep him on antibiotics for at least 90 days-best bet to get rid of the infection for good. |

Just had surgery on my GSP G-Man for the same type of thing. Migrated down into his throat. Bad stuff. Check your dogs feet, ears, coat, mouth after you work a field. This is a very common problem. Stay out of the fields that have the types of grass that creates the problem. You would be amazed at just how far these things can migrate. It can take a year of migrating before you see a symtom. I've known Tracy and Wayne for quite a while. Both of them are good vets. Both own and run their dogs including field trials. They know something about sporting dogs which is an advantage when it comes to diagnosis of things others may miss. Good luck Vic, Nancy, Kutya. Gary and the Big Dog. |

Good to hear he's at home and responding well, youth is in his favor. Spear grass is abundant this year in CO with all of the rain we've had. Goat heads should be bad as well. I've been doing quite a bit of selective mowing and spraying this year to try and keep them at a minimum....but it's a slippery uphill slope. . |

Glad to hear Kutya is improving too. My thoughts go out to all. Just received in the mail today, Gun Dog magazine has excellent artice titled "Heads Up on Grass Awns!". seemed timely to mention it as it has some excellent information and resources. |

Here are parts of an email from Vic:
All cultures came back as negative.
I mean he is infected, but current anti-biotics are doing the trick.
Am feeding him over 5 cups a day now to bulk him up a bit. He is eating all of it.
He is adjusting to home life well.
2nd blood test indicates white blood cell count still up, which means he is fighting infection. Vet says that is good.
Will be taking another x-ray in 2 weeks to see how much of the fluid is reduced out of his lung.
He is perky and bouncy. No indication he is sick at home whatsoever.
I am using the time to re-connect and doing some handling drills with him.
So, he is no longer near death, thank the Lord and all the prayers.
Taking him off anti-biotics will be the next hurdle. At least one more month on them. |

Great news, what a mental stugle you and your family have been through! These dogs sure nudge their way next to our hearts and into our lives!! Life kind of sucks when these things are happening and make all other things seem petty.. I'm so glad to here things are on the up swing and he is taking so well to the treatment! Best wishes, Steve |

The beauty of a good retriever is not in the color, length , or texture of his coat. Nor is it in the set of his ear or the shape of his muzzle. His beauty is in a sound body, strong legs, and good feet, and in intelligence and alertness. It's in his power, his alertness, his proud bearing, and his efficient motion-his class! - James Lamb Free __________________ |

Good News on Kutya! X-Ray's came showed clear. No fluid in lungs or in chest cavity. Blood work came back as "normal". Vet says he is healthy and can go back to training. Vet says a seed cannot be confirmed or ruled out. But she said a dog usually doesn't respond so quickly to anti-biotics if it was a foxtail. Praying that it was just an injury, and not a foxtail. Thank you all for the prayers and support. Vic
