Kutya is a male out of my Mallard x Birdie litter and is owned by Vic Rompa.   This is parts of Vic's email to me that I have copied and pasted.

Kutya inhaled a seed that had bore it's way through the lung (could be anything, but cheet and foxtails are most well known).  Kutya has dense fluid in his chest cavity, has a fever.  He is very sick.  No telling when it happened
.

Optimal treatment is the CSU intensive care unit.

Based on the estimates I had to weigh family responsibilities and my beloved and talented dog.  Vet guestimated $10K easily up to $15K to put him in a the CSU hospital for the most aggressive treatment (catheter in infected area, negative pressure and flushing, in ICU, then most likely surgery to remove all of the infection).

Next best alternative is to drain fluids with a needle, take a culture (X-rays and such already done) and give him most effective anti-biotic's based on the culture results. A much cruder method.  So, now I pray that I and the designed desire of self preservation will allow Kutya to heal himself with the 2nd best treatment available.    On the plus side, he is with with Dr. Wayne Jensen, in Wellington.  Met him at many hunt tests and he is really a hunting dog kind of vet.  Most vets won't do what he will attempt to do.

Thanks to Paul who saw he was lethargic today and took most of his time today to take him to the vet and wait for results.  Kutya would have been dead in about 2 days if he had not done so.

Kutya is also young (14 months) and very healthy (until now).  Kutya now needs to fight for his life, and of course, your prayers if you are so inclined.

Churchill had a foxtail, too. They are NASTY. Vic/LeRoy, ask if the vet has a scope he can send down into his lung and suction out all the fluid, and then give him a couple kinds of antibiotics at the same time until the culture comes back. Best wishes, Vic!

Hooli's suggestion is certainly what they might attempt on a human..broad spectrum antibiotics and removal of the fluid...got to remember the ABC's airway, breathing, circulation...in that order...nothing else matters if he cdoesn't have a patent airway...he needs supplemental O2 also...maybe a tent would be most effective for an animal...lets hope he's not septic yet...

MY PRAYERS ARE WITH YOU!!!

So sorry to hear this. We take so much for granted with our dogs and the risks that they encounter doing what they love and are bred to do.....
I hope and pray that he bounces back quickly and fully.

Vic, prayers are with you from the Smileys. We went through the inhaled foxtail issue with Cody. I am sure your vet's already know this but just in case, the bacteria often carried by those seeds is called Nocardia. It is very difficult culture and kill, long incubation period and was described to me to almost act like a fungus. I pass this on only due to personal experience of myself and others who contacted me when I was going through this with my dog. Lots of folks warned me that the infection can come back if all possible tissue around the infection site is not removed and long term antibiotics administered.

Keep up the good attitude.  I know of many dogs that have had a seed work through them (like Hoolie's) and are still out there hunting today.  I certainly wish the best for your pup.

Robert, Churchill had that scope procedure done at 3 am at an emergency vet hospital in Portland...they can do most of the same stuff for pets that they do for humans nowadays.

Foxtails are a very common-and very serious-thing with hunting dogs, unfortunately.

All, thank you for your prayers and support. Nice to have a community like this.

Update. Doc said this morning that he was responding to anti-biotics. So much so that he ate this morning and his fever is down. Vet removed more of the fluid than he thought he would and also he said it was not as thick as he expected. Both good signs.

I am going to see him today and will provide another update later.
I know this is just a start, but so far so good.

Keep those prayers coming...
Nancy and I thank you.

Great news Vic! I know its early, but steps in the right direction are encouraging.

Please keep us updated, I feel like one of my own is down and out right now. It is amazing to me, but many other people "just don't get it" how attached we are to our dogs. On this forum, "we get it" and truly feel your agony and pain. Most of us have had that sick feeling in our stomachs more than once.

Good luck and prayers from Michigan are on the way!

Wow, tough news for sure Vic. Prayers sent, good to hear he is responding.

Those dang weed and grass seeds can spell trouble for a bird dog. Keep us posted and best of luck to Kutyna.
