Went up to the Northeast South Dakota area this past weekend snow goose hunting. There were literally millions of birds in the area, but they would not decoy at all. We tried several different fields and all types of setups but just could not get anything to commit. It was very frustrating to have birds everywhere you looked but nothing that would come within gun range. Still amazing to see all the birds around. Here are some pictures from the weekend.

We usually pass shoot the big groups. Been guiding since the first season and after about the 3rd season decoying just doesnt kill geese very often. Works when its foggy or blustery.
If you can find two groups feeding we try to get between them and pass shoot.
Be all you can be.

It would be worth the trip for sure to come see that amount of birds. The pictures actually do not do it justice.
I think our biggest problem was we were too early, everyone got excited since the migration was a behind schedule a couple weeks and most people were thinking the geese were just going to blow through South Dakota. Turns out we should have gone this weekend probably. Talked to some friends that are hunting the same area we were, and the birds numbers are not as great right now. But the geese are actually decoying and they have been having some pretty good luck the past couple days.
One the bright side of things I will not have to buy and ammo for this fall waterfowl season. Still have 12 full boxes of shells since we did not get into much shooting!!!
