Run your PL in the Flushing division --- makes it much more fun -- particularly listening to the other contenders pizz & moan.

Thats what they still do here. Labs are considered a flushing breed. The type of hunt and rules that apply are depending on the type/breed of dog. But its still really fun. Jade and I are 3 for 3 in the flushing division for first place. She points, people gripe, we win! And of course there is my favorite part: "labs arent supposed to do that are they???". Those contests are very fun. I love them. Wish we had more.

Not going to make it this year Lance,,, But i am sure Rich and his son and all of you will do well.. I hope you guys have a great time!   I am going dowm to Bearpoint kennels to give samples to some people from California that are trying to locate the pointing gene in Labs... I guess they have more funding and need more DNA samples.

Man I was really looking forward to this event. Unfortunatly I got sent to San Diego on work assignment, so I won't be able to make it. Guess I will go fishing instead. Booked a trip to coronado islands. No dogs, no birds, no guns (bummer) Oh well maybe next time. I hope you keep having these events. I really want to start participating.

I'm kind of interested in running one of these pheasant opens once my dog is trained.  Could someone fill me in on how they score these pheasant opens?  Is it just based on who can shoot and retrieve all their pheasants in the shortest time?  Thanks.

Ours are done by points and time. Each gunner can only have 3 shells per man. 1 point given per shell so 6 points starting. Planted are Pheasant Rooster and hen and a chukar. 1 point given for each bird found, flushed,  and shot. For a possible score of 3. 1 point given for each bird retrieved by dog to hand. for a possible score of 3. For each shell shot one point is taken away. Maximum score is 9 out of 9 points. If your in the flushing division and your dog catches a bird you lose a point for a shell being shot whether fired or not. If your in the pointing division and your dog traps or catches the bird you lose the point for found and shot bird. Time is 15 minutes given for 3 birds or 20 for 4 birds.

Along with this we also do a skeet shooting contest. 1 clay thrown and hit = 1 point. 1 clay thrown and hit with a breakoff piece hit by team member = 2 points extra. If missed on breakaway minus one point or 0 even though it was originally hit. If gunner misses and teammate hits clay 1 point is given.  Each gunner shoots 5 rounds from 5 different stations and is backed by teammate. Best overall combined score of the teams with the 5 best scores shoot again.

We had 25 teams last event. Usually the top 4 or 5 teams go to a championship round and hunt again or shoot again. This gives three finishing divisions and 3 places each division. Best hunt score and time places 1 to 3, best skeet score places 1 to 3 and best combined score for both events for top team and bragging rights. We finished round one in 2nd place initially in 8 mins 30 seconds with 8 points( we got 4 birds, not category for that, but shot 4 times losing a shell point) then got bumped to 3rd when I guided a group without dogs to finish in 6min 52 secs and 8 points. We took top overall in the championship round with a score of 9 out of 9 and a time of 4 mins 8 sec. This is a general rule for  a hunt competions thats done in Utah and Idaho in some areas. A lot are similiar to this from what I hear. But I recommend doing them, they are very fun!!!
