Hello to all,

I am wanting to do a couple day hopefully self guided or walk-in public land Pheasant hunt around the Christmas time frame either in KS or MO or? I have looked at the public walk-in booklet for Kansas but I need help from you folks that hunt the areas.

I am looking for more info? were to go? another states beside the Dakotas? I am wanting to get the most out of the short time for the hunt, or if you know of a good pay as you go place let me know also.

Thank You

Richard

Richard,
Stay away from Missouri. It will be well worth your time to hunt in Kansas and not Missouri. When in Kansas, go west of Salina. When are you planning on going?

I was going to say the same thing as jeremy. MO has some pheasants up in the NW corner, but the population isnt great. Also can find pheasants straight nort of Topeka, closer to the NE line and west, but you get a higher density in terms of population the farther west you go. I like the north central due to the population of bobwhites which hold much nicer for pointing dogs.

If youre coming to pick up Max from K&L, youre going to have a several hour drive before you get in to pheasant country. Most people dont realize just how big KS is.

Thanks for the info,

I am going to try and come around Christmas time frame this year.

Ed, I have Max at home now, so I can fly to a closer airport now.

I would fly in to Salina or Hays then. WIHA can be productive in KS. It will be difficult with one guy and a dog. I usually hunt like that in January when its really cold and/or there is snow on the ground. A lot of the WIHA tends to be big CRP ground. If you do some arial scouting on google earth youll have a little better idea of what the terrain looks like. If you have limited time, a day or two and want to up your odds, you might look in to finding a place that is managed for birds. I havent looked in to that in KS since Im a native, but we are doing something similar in SD this week. Paying for lodging and access to land managed for pheasants, the rest is up to us.

Thanks,
My wife just told me the hunting packet from Hays arrived so I guess I did make a good choice in asking for it. That is nice to know

Not sure if you got a WIHA atlas in your packet, but if not shoot me your mailing address and I can shoot one your way.  As stated get to the west side of the state, after that North or South doesn't really matter, the birds are thick this year from what Ive seen this last weekend.  I hunted Saturday around Ness City and Sunday just West of Russel.  Both areas have quite a bit of QUALITY walk-in and if you're lucky maybe we'll have some snow here around Christmas.  Good Luck, I'd tag along but that time of year is SD time w/ the wife's family.

To far for just a couple days, and I want to limit my total flight time to no more than 9.5 hours

Just got back from KS.  Bird #'s best in NW part of State.  1/2 the crops still up, but hunts were still good.  All crops should be in by Christmas.  LOTS of quality walk-in areas as was mentioned.

I usually go to either north or south Dakota for a week, but decided to try my hand in KS.
Good luck to you.

Vic

I didnt see your dogs name but you could hook up w/ Mike at Lanka's I would assume and get some nice private grounds over near him. Worse case scenario he is in some good stuff around the area.

Western Ks has been good this year. I have some connections around Scott City where we could hunt private land on a weekend. Always looking for another reason to get the pup out.
