Kevin,

How in the heck do you hunt with 7 dogs? Does each dog get a 10 minute shift, or do you run them in pairs?

I can't stand even running 2 dogs at the same time! Maybe that's the secret though...

The birds are scarce out here, I shot the only rooster we saw yesterday. It landed in standing corn and it took about 10 minutes to find it, but Cricket came trotting back to me with it in her mouth after a bit! She's quickly become my favorite upland dog!

I'm thinking about hitting again this afternoon with Maverick seeing how I've been giving all of the recent work to the youngsters! I'm trying to hit all of the wild birds that I can before the 'preserve' hunts really kick in.

Glad to see your having success on the eastern side of the state. I'm currently talking with PF about what can be done out here to improve habitat. Hopefully we can get a chapter off and running and slowly make a difference.

Happy hunting!

Rob

Nice picture Rob!
Not many pheasants in your area? They are down here in central Iowa but there is still allot of corn in the fields and late hunting should be better.....right now we are hitting waterfowl.

Between lack of public access and little or no habitat, the western slope of Colorado is very poor for upland hunting. I've heard lots of stories about how good it used to be , but it currently sucks. This part of the state is mainly known for it's big game hunting, but I hope to work hard to improve the habitat for birds. I'm talking with PF to start a chapter out here and I'm also working hard with trying to generate more interest in bird hunting through the preserve that I work at.

Not much waterfowl hunting out here, a few areas along the rivers, but getting access is tough. Most of the waterfowl around here is local I think. There is some good grouse hunting and there are quite a few Gambel's quail, but once again, its tough to gain access to good hunting spots.

Rosco gets up a huge rooster No shot(flu at a house)One bird but what a rush!!! I just follow the dogs and let them do there thing! We hunted one field half a section all morning just switched up dogs... I guess I am fortunate they all hunt there own way and rarely follow each other.

Nice keven I sure wish I had a couple more labs down here. Ran Red with a bunch of pointers yesterday out at Newdales. He did a real good job but he just can't run all day with the pointers. But he can retrieve with the best of them. And he can find a lost bird when most can't. Hunted Ducks today we only got one Woody. I blew it on a couple of other ducks, called to take them a bit early. I should have let them go around one more time. Not many new birds in yet so it was real slow. Will keep you and Tom informed we will get you both down here when the river starts to pickup.

I took the dogs out to the hunt club today for some bird work. I let three birds fly into the fields for each dog and took them in one at a time.

When I got home, I had just unloaded the dogs and put them into their kennels when I heard a rooster (wild one) cackle in one of my fields. I just had to take one of the dogs out and look for it. Let me tell you that is a hard choice when the other two are forced to watch from their kennels.

Cricket won out and we took off after it. We found it pretty quickly and she pointed it for a good 20 seconds or so and allowed me to go in and flush it. I mention the point because she kind of 'lost her way' with regard to pointing for a while, but I got two really nice points out of her earlier in the day at the hunt club and a very nice point on this wild rooster. It doesn't matter as she is my favorite dog in the world to hunt behind point or no point!

I didn't get a picture of the points, but here is Cricket with her reward!
