I went out this weekend - took two shots (missed them both).
Jack found a hen and a rooster (I missed).
Maverick found a hen.
Cricket found 3 roosters (One too far out, one my friend missed, one I missed)! |

Yeah, I hunted a couple different areas of private land here in Cedaredge. The state 'walk in' program is practically non-existent on the western slope. |

Hey Kevin&Jerry, It's fun trying to find some good out of the way spots. A Cabela's trip always makes it worthwhile!
I hunted Colorado the 1st two years they started the walk in program. It started with around 160,000 acres. Then decreased to sub 100,000. Now is is back up to 168,000 acres. Last numbers I saw indicated there were 60,000 pheasant hunters in CO. So, just as you said, one guy leaving another coming into the field. Not conducive to bird finding. Good news is die hard hunters are few, but they are still there.
I will tell you my two sweet spots (4-5 years ago). Can't guarantee it will be the same of course, but the micro-terrain lent itself to holding birds in CRP.
South of Yuma. Intersection C30.
Also, Just North of Stratton in Kit Carson County (out of the way for most of us). Surrounding area has lots of Sand hills, but within that are some sweet CRP plots. They even planted the gullies/middle with Milo. Nowhere for birds to go because it is surrounded by scrub brush and corn is scarce. They need the milo. Driving out there you go, birds out here? But then you hit the walk-in areas and say, "OK, yah".
I mean, don't get me wrong, still nothing like other pheasant states, but good for some birds.
Good news if no birds in Stratton area you take a 45 minute trip to Nebraska. Some very productive walk-in areas just across the I70 border (north). Not many Nebraskans go there because it is out of the way for them.
Jut thought I'd share with my buds.
Vic

Way to get after em Kevin! It was also the 2nd split opener for ducks. My good buddy Jordan, his Grandfather Mike and I had a wonderful weekend. However, it seemed like every time I got a bead on a duck it had already been shot. Youth hunters will do that to you, but oh what a joy to see the looks on his face and excitement in his voice letting us know about the ducks coming in from behind us. He was our rear view mirror, a great caller and a darn good shot! Pi had three rock solid finds on quail. One covey Saturday on a short walk and one covey and a single on Sunday on another short walk. 20 ducks, 2 quail and several misses and missed opportunities. Beat myself up setting up on Friday, I wanted to stay through Monday but my body said I should pack up while I still had help picking up. First pic was Friday close to sunset on a nice little spot about 100 yards short of where I set up and those aren’t decoys on the water. Youth hunter, Pi and I with Saturday am bag and finally Pi bringing back a cripple she tracked down, that ran in to a feed strip with heavy cover. |

It would be a lot easier if you were 13. It's a tough place to get a guest on these days. If I could, I'd get all of you on the place at one time or another. Can you go at the spur of the moment? Jazzy would be appalled at Pi's manors. She's not very lady like at times and thinks all of the ducks are hers. |

Can you go at the spur of the moment? Jazzy would be appalled at Pi's manors. She's not very lady like at times and thinks all of the ducks are hers. Sure, I can go spur of the moment anytime, as long as I'm not in SD,ND, KS, MT,NE, and last and least CO Hunting. Jazz has very good manors in this regard, if an other dog wanted the bird, I have seen Jazz actually drop it and just run or swim back to me. .. no problem, no doggy fight. |
