I should tell you also, this video does not address "hunting" per se. It only describes a method for developing "manners on birds" - What I call the Steadies and Stops. Steadiness on point, Stop to wild Flush (which is related remotely) and Steady to Wing, Shot and Fall (which are extensions of the other stuff).
The video was made as a demonstration of the method Bill West used on all the pointing breed dogs he had been training. A fellow had a pair of FT bred Lab. puppies (No known Pointing Lab influence) and folks were saying the method would "work" with any bird crazy dog. The idea, the pups, a cameraman and Bill came together and they spent a summer making the video.
He was later quoted as saying this was the most difficult training job he'd ever taken on. I am sure the difficulty resulted from the low natural point in the two fire breathing FT Lab pups. I found the method ideally suited to working with my own PLs. After sufficient exposure to wild birds they came along very rapidly. When I started working them there in Arizona, one pointed staunchly and stood steady to wing, shot and fall on the fourth carded pigeon he ever saw (VERY much to Bill Gibbons' disbelief and surprise). Bill G. had been present and helped make the video. Jere |

Sproulman, You might want to look at my home page on my web site. I will be releasing the first in a series of PL training DVD's this fall. There are some clips, flash file, on there from the video. If you teach your dog the concepts about upland birds it makes little difference what type of terrain or species you will be hunting. The basic concept of find birds, point them and then bring them back is the same. Your dog will get good at what ever you spend the most time hunting. Good luck this season. Gary PRG |

I have seen the entire force fetch portion. Very Cool! There is information in there that you will not find anywhere else. I have seen other DVDs that skim the suface and leave you wondering, especially when things take a dump. I have have read books as well, but seeing it done while being instructed really sinks home for me. Many special effects that help you along the way. Some good humor too. From what little I have seen these DVDs are what I have been looking for. Check out the trailer on the front page of their website www.poudrerivergundogs.com Happy training to all |

Being a first time gun dog owner, my training resources consisted of
what I learned from books and/or around the camp fire at my local game
preserve. After receiving a copy of Gary's DVD set, all I can say
is..... O how I wish I had these resources when my dog was younger.
These DVD's do a great job of breaking down all of the activities you
expect a good pointing retriever to do like: marking, retrieving to
hand, steadiness, whoa, etc. Everyone has watched those DVD's that show
you how to do training with "the perfect dog". Gary takes the time to
not just tell you how to do the exercises step-by-step but also tells
you what to do when things go wrong and how to correct them. This
resource will save you and your dog a lot of time and headaches. |
