I brought home my first pointing lab 2 weeks ago and so far things have been going well.  I have been reading these forum post a lot and they have been a great help.  I also have been trying to follow Julie's book, which has been great as well.  One thing that my 10 week old pup has started to do, that I have not read much about, is stalking.  When in the back yard he likes to watch me walk away from him (about 10 yards or so), I call him to me, and immediately his nose goes to the ground and he begins to slowly walk straight to me, like he is stalking me.  He gets to within a couple feet, points/stares for a couple seconds, and then just pounces on me in excitement.  At this age to him and to me it just seems to be a fun game to play, and I get excited to see his natural pointing instincts come out.  However, is this something that I should try to limit or control?  I have been doing it the past couple days and he seems to really like to do it, he actually does the same thing to my wife as well.  I know he is only 10 weeks old, but I don't want to do anything that could hamper his pointing ability once I introduce him to birds.  On the same note, is there anything that I could be doing to enhance or strengthen what seems to be his natural instincts?  Thanks for any and all your help.

Very typical of pointing dogs of all breeds. It is a good thing. You will see it when there are several pups together. They will stock each other.

You should consider introducing him to a bird. Something non threatening like a pigeon. Good time to imprint what a bird looks like and smells like. I have seen little guys seven weeks old pointing when introduced to birds. Don't worry too much about formal training at this age. Just fun stuff, bush whacking walks, simple retrieves. Once the water warms up introduce him to water. Be careful how you do that.

Be patient. Don't be in a hurry to do anything at this age. In fact I would say don't be in a hurry to do anything at any age. Forget the timelines and teach right not fast. Very common mistake many make. Too much too fast.

Sangell, I'd be careful about allowing obnoxious behavior. Though you want this dog hunting and pointing in the upland field, you'll be living with him for a long time in the house. Teach him now what you'll accept and what you won't. I don't want some dog stalking me because THAT is not what they're here for. He can do that stuff in the field, but at home, he needs to respect you, your wife and your space. A pup that age can learn that and it won't screw up their bird work.

I need some help/ advice  Please tell me if I'm doing some thing wrong, my puppy is 4 months old, until about a month ago she would stalk and point toys in the house and back yard, then when I started to use a pheasant wing on a fishing pole, she pointed for a litle bit and I let her catch the wing and play with it she chewed the first couple wings and would not want to give them back so I stoped training with the wing for a couple weeks, I started again and she does not point it she just wants to chaise and grab it, I also got some quail  and let her play with them, she picked them up ran around with them but did not kill them, what I'm afraid of is, if I let her catch and play with the wings or birds she will loose the desire to point, m'I being too concerned?? what can I doo or should doo to stop her from catching the wings or birds and point?  she still stalks and points but not as much, please help I'm still a rookie at this training.

ps. sorry for the mispelled words and format I'm not a native English speacker.

Lusitano.

NEVER, let her catch a wing or wild (alive) bird!! Toss the wing and pole..get it gone! Yea its cute to see a pup point the wing, but she is old enough to be on the real deal...you will do more harm than good at this point with a wing! Put her on a check cord when you encounter birds...research pointing in this forum...you will learn a ton...buy Julies book advertised here...Training The Pointing Labrador....or even better...Go to a pro trainer!!

Thank you very much for the advice I appreciate it, the wings are gone and I joined a hunting retriver club wich does training 3 times a week, but the dogs are all just retrivers no pointers, so the experience on pointing dogs is not that good in this club, I did read julie's book I think it was the first one, I also watched 4 videos about pointing dogs and that is were I got the ideia on one of them to use a pheasant wing and to let the puppy  play with a live bird on another, but after seeing how the puppy started to behave I  did not  fill confortable with it I had the filling that it was the wrong way to do it. Thank you again.

What does he do if you do NOT call him??

I wish you had some video. This could be nothing more serious than play solicitation. In any case, you have responded with play so that's what the pup will associate with the behavior.
