I had Thor out to the farm running scratch birds from the weekend.  It was very warm and I knew it would be a tough hunt, so I wasnt expecting much.  We went around a small woods hitting the grass on the edges when he locked on point at the edge of the woods, I didnt see anything and a tweety bird flew out, I went on with life.  (screw up 1)  As the hunt was drawing to a close with no birds in air, we were working the cover between a pond and a plowed field.  The cover was a mix of tammarack and red willow so it was thick.  Thor again locks on point, not only that but leg up tail out pretty point,  being the idiot that I am I again looked around thinking it was a tweety bird and when I didnt see anything kept walking.  Thor turned his head and was reluctant to follow but eventually did. (screw up 2)  As I was leaving the owner calls me and says there is a bird on the edge of the field by the pond.  My heart sank, I walked around to see where it was and sure enough exactly on the other side of the cover where Thor pointed, 5 yards from where he locked was a rooster sitting in the grass.  I have been P.O.'d at myself 3 days.  I have always taught my son to trust your dogs nose and not your head and guess what I did. AAAAGGGHHHH!!!!!      Well lesson learned and you can bet I will check out every point.  Does anyone think I set myself backwards with this move?   My thinking on this was that he has always pointed so close that I wasnt expecting a lock on a bird I couldnt tell where it was exactly.  Let the abuse begin.

It doesn't matter...the only thing you can do is to move forward.  Don't dwell on it 'cause there is nothing you can do to go back and change the situation.  Learn from it, let it go, and do better next time.  It's all you can do.

??????  I didn't read about any flyaways in his post...  I thought he was upset 'cause he didn't trust his dog's points and pulled him off of legitimate pointed birds...

Mountain, your correct about the post. Today although 70 degrees and dry we tried again. We only got 3 out of 5 birds up 2 flushed very early and in very thick cover offering no safe shot. (not high enough over the dog) and the third bird he pointed almost on top of it. I flushed and shot he retrieved. He did point on some spots and I made every one count but the birds were just running. It would have been a very difficult hunt for my old pro much less the 6 mos old pup. I was just happy that it looks like he forgot about the other day and kept doing his thing.

My mistake -- I actually meant to say "No-Bird(s)" are part of the game.
