Genetics researchers at UC Davis veterinary genetics lab have been trying to investigate the genetic origin of pointing in LRs since 2004 when they put out the initial call for samples. This is part of a much larger study of the genetics of pointing in dogs. They have had very little response from the PL community.
Why? It's free. All you have to do is request a sample kit, take a few cheek swabs and mail the kit back on their dime. Of course they do ask that the dogs sampled actually exhibit a natural (untrained) point.
