Hello;

New to the forum and not sure whether it's customary here to post an into or not, but I've been chastized on other forums for not doing so...So here it goes:

Dave Peterson

Living in Royse City TX (40 mi East of Dallas)

From Mtn Home ID

Military Retiree (28 yrs USAF)...Not enough $$ to live on, that's why I'm in Texas...

Aircraft Manufacturing

40 "something"

With that said, the reason I'm here is I recently picked up a pup (out of Trieven / Kellogg stock) and I'm interested in pursuing some of the PL he's got in him...I have some questions that maybe someone might be able to help me with:

Do I have to join a certain entity in order to qualify or quantify the pup in a certan PL registry??

Of course, the pup is already AKC, but is it required to register with another group for eligibilty purposes in the PL circuit?

I noticed an annual $35 APLA fee as I was naving my way through the site...Really???...$35 bucks a year???
I'm not destitute, but kinda' steep considering AKC is a one-time thing....Maybe I'm reading that info wrong.

Thanks in advance for any info

Welcome Dave,
You have to a member of the APLA to play in the game, along with your dog being registered with an organzation like AKC.
I think 35.00 a year for membership is very reasonable but that is me.
Congrats on the new pup

Dave, Welcome! Good luck with your pup.

The APLA is not a breed registry like AKC is. We are, essentially a hunt test organization and promoters of the labs that naturally point. There is no fee or way of placing your dog on a pointing lab registry based on pedigree. We put on hunt tests where the dog can demonstrate point (among some other things) and if the dog passes it recieves a title and is then listed in our dog database.

So the $35 annual membership fee is not to have your dog registered, it is for your membership in the APLA. You have to be a member to access the member portion of this site and also to run or have your dog ran in APLA hunt tests.

Once a member, your web access will be enabled to view a "member" forum. One of the things in the member forum is a "contact" area by region of the US where people can see other PL owners around them and post their own contact info if they wish.

Again good luck with your dog. I have owned a few dogs that have the same lines in their pedigree and they have done well for me.

Thanks for your service Dave.
There is a lot of great info on this site for both upland and waterfowl hunting and training. Even more about the testing venue. There are tests in the spring then again in the fall. Spring tests are listed for now under the contact us tab and will be moved to the events tab shortly.

Welcome and good luck.

Thanks for the replies everyone...

Another question---- If you become a member in good standing (via $35 annual dues), are there additional costs incurred in order to participate in hunt tests?

I'm trying to find the value in the annual membership for the hunting-type guy that just wants to run the tests a little (when they swing through the region) as a way of extending their field time and (if fortunate enough), maybe picking up a few titles for his dog.

Curious as to what the perks would be...Example $35 HRC (annual) membership includes a magazine subscription, et al...

The APLA web site really doesn't mention where or how membership dues go to.

Thanks Again,
Dave

Where = past tense as it was written. Now he knows if things change and he moves in this area again that there are PL people here.

By the way, it is good to know there's a few PL boys around Boise...I'd love to move back, and I certainly do visit family every so often...

Actually thinking about a vistit in November of 2013.

Hey Micah, you ever hunt down at C.J. Strike WMA?

Dave, There is a cost involved in running in a hunt test here in the APLA, just as there is if you run any other hunt test out there, ie. AKC, UKC, etc.

Only you can decide if you want to run in a few test a year. For instance, I run in 2 APLA test a year, and now with the 2nd dog this next test in April will cost me $355.00, That is $270.00 for both days in Master, and $85.00 to run CPR which is one day. But don't look at the cost in just the dollar amount. There are more birds involved than any AKC or UKC hunt test, which is the majority of the hunt test cost, Yes it is slightly higher, but the club cannot loose money either.

Good point (no pun intended) Max.

Birds cost bucks, and looking through any given PL test, there's quite a few birds associated with each test.

When you think about it like that, it's probably a pretty good deal.

So, how often does the circuit typically make its way around the country?

Better yet, is there an APLA club close by my area (DFW to Shreveport, Louisiana)?

The hunt test locations are decided by the board after reviewing test "applications". Where the tests are held is somewhat based on where the people applying for a test live. There are a few other factors but thats the basics. There arent many area clubs if any. Mostly people with pl's that just get together to train from time to time. You might check the trainers or breeders tabs to see who is in your area and give them a call.

Oh yeah. I hunted there last year end of season before I moved up here it was awesome. I went with another PL guy from here on opening day this year and I was the only guy to end up with a duck in hand. The water level this year has ran around 15000 cfm whereas last year it was only 9000. We went to a spot they had went last year with a Permanent blind. He said that they had a ten foot beach last year to the water. This year the bench in the blind was under water. Crazy year and hard hunting. I have some property on the Boise River by Eagle Island State Park. I ended up killing more ducks from my driveway than I did over setups this year with the water so high everywhere. But It was sure fun trying!!!

Maintainer here also, CASA, King Air, Cessna Citiaion, DC-3TP, plus small single and twins. as far as clubs for each area or state, none realy right now. If you have joined the APLA then you will have access to the members area, and will be able to see what members are in your area. I think your closest test will be Kansas/Missouri area.
