Three weeks ago : Our neighbor called my office and said there was a big Cougar between his house and ours -- He lives 600' behind us.
Two Weeks Ago : A big Tom Cougar is hit and killed by a truck 2 miles from our house.
One Week Ago : The wife was doing obedience with her dog around our yard. The dog's hair stood up -- and right at the close end of our driveway (50' from the house), a Cougar kitten bolted out. The wife said it was 3X or 4X the size of a housecat.
Tonight : An "authorzed" Cougar Hunter knocked on our door and said to beware and carry a gun if we were outside and not to worry if we saw him walking/sneaking around the woods around our place, because he was going to try to "get the kitty".

We had one around our place when Pi was a pup. The DOW agent said they follow the deer head and our aging horse was probably in more danger than the pup. Mainly because they prey on hooved animals....They sent us several brochures "Living with Cougars" to distribute to our neighbors. Did the DOW authorize an out of season shooting of the Cougar? Trouble Cougar or just one living off the deer and a licensed hunter instead of autorized? Did he say why?

HERE KITTY KITTY BANG! Here in Iowa the DNR is finally acknokeldging that there are cougars that are breeding.... Before it was just "wondering young males" and such, then a deer hunter shot a mature female out of a tree from his tree stand (OR SOMETHIGN LIKE THAT) and the story was on the front page of the outdoors section. From the sounds of things the tree huggers had a puching bag for a while, and the farmer whose ground he was on pretty much said the guy had huinting rights on his graund for life..... two sides to everythign |

Out here, when cougars get into an area where they could be a threat to humans, they are allowed to be shot (we have NO season - thanks to the AR people in the Seattle area). DOW has a list of cougar hunters that are called on when one needs to be eliminated. Cougars can live off of deer anyplace out here -- we have deer everywhere.

As you know we have deer all over the place in CO. So we also have cougars all over the place, they just don't show themselves often..... DOW will most often tranquilize and relocate, unless there is foul play. Same deal with bears...actually some counties have started to fine residents that do not keep their trash out of reach of wildlife or for feeding wildlife. Most of the problem cougars in CO have been along the foothills and yuppies feeding them steaks and burgers off the grill. Then they get all upset when the cougar runs of with Pierre, their little designer dog. |

We are hoping they open the season up to higher numbers in South Dakota. The State limit is only 40 cats or when 25 females have been shot. Numbers are still growing. Id like to see them lower the population so that they dont end up out of control and start lowering the elk and bighorn populations. |

Had a friend archery hunting up by Kremmling for elk, was waiting in a big bush by a meadow when he turned his head and seen a 120 lb Mountian Lion sneeking up on him, He shot him in the head at 15 feet away, He said he had to clean his drawers after that, If he wouldnt of turned and seen him he may of been toast.

Well, it seems our kitty cat is gone. She was probably just relocating her den (as many members of the cat family do) and our place was just an intermediate stop. Neither she nor any young ones have been seen for at least a week. . |

IMO, your lives are all richer for her disappearance.

We live right in the heart of mountain lion country. It is not uncommon to see dead mule dear on our property on a regular basis. My neighbor who is a trapper says we have a big tom that roams the valley. I've gotten used to that, but last year we had a huge infestation of black bears in the area. All told, 9 bears were shot and killed by the CDOW or hunters working for the state wiithin a 3 mile radius of my home and there were 3 sheep and 1 donkey killed by bears... Last week my neighbor spotted a black bear wandering across my field. Looks like another summer of bears... |
