The Michigan Amateur Field Trial Club hosts two "Hunting Dog Classics" each season at the famed Gladwin Field Trial Grounds in Meridith, MI. The First Hunting Dog stake is held on a single course through grouse cover finishing in a bird field, there most likely will be some wild birds (grouse/woodcock) found on the course.

The Second Trial in August is a real gem, run on all wild birds on a continuous course, 30 minute braces through intensely managed northern Michigan forests. Last time I was at this event in 2008 there were grouse and wc on every course and at times in good numbers.

This event is judged to hunting dog standards, birds need to be pointed so the handler can flush them and fire a blank pistol. Judging stops to the flush, a good forward run and hitting objectives is desired, all it takes to win is a point on a wild bird.

Lots of Grouse and WC hunters in and around our state that I thought might be interested in the events. I have judged them in the past if you have any questions please feel free to ask.

MAFTC 2010 Trial Schedule

April  11
Hunting Dog Stake, only dogs with no prior Shooting Dog placements, single course with liberated and wild birds, judgment ceases at flush.

August  22
Michigan Grouse & Woodcock Hunting Dog Classic, continuous course, only dogs with no prior Shooting Dog placements, judgment ceases at flush.

Michigan Grouse & Woodcock Hunting Dog Classic
It's nearly August and time for the annual Michigan Grouse & Woodcock Hunting Dog Classic hosted by the Michigan Amateur Field Trial Club.

This stake is intended for hunting dogs, not seasoned field trial dogs, dogs with no prior Shooting Dog or All Age placements. We run on the continuous courses at the Gladwin Field Trial Area on wild birds and run this event in the same manner as our sanctioned events. The major difference is judging, judgement ceases at the flush of the bird. Steady to wing and shot is not required. The stake is intended to introduce folks to the game we play and the grounds we play on. We have Shooting Dog and Derby on Saturday Aug. 21 and the Hunting Dog on Sunday morning, Aug 22. Judges for this event are Rich Hollister & Fritz Heller.

We always provide nice prizes for the winners and Purina donates product that is distributed to all participants.

Saturday evening at the Alibi Hall (on the grounds) the club will have the grilles going and will provide hamburgs, hot dogs and such. Please bring something to pass, if you can, we won't be checked' at the door (single barrel bourbon is always a nice thing to share)

More info, entry contacts, etc posted at http://coverdog.blogspot.com/

Below is a photo of the winners and a number of participants from this past spring trial (it's posted at the blog and if you click on the photo it will increase in size)

Frank,

This event is open to all pointing dogs, does not matter the breed, it is a pointing dog trial. If you have a lab that points you are eligible for entry.

Flushing dogs are not eligible for entry.

Thanks and hope to see some labs on the ground.

Fritz

NOPE, No labs can play. Too bad, would have been fun. Sure glad my dogs can't read either the LRC Book, or the AF/FDSB as to what is accepted as an upland pointing dog, or they would be more confused than they already are. LOL !
Probably make lousy grouse hunters anyways

there is good example that POINTING LAB  is not accepted.its hard to change people that pointing lab does point naturally.
toby my lab is not accepted grouse hunting also. i am only one with lab and the pointing dog owners dont really want their dogs near us.

i guess toby may show their POIINTING DOGS  bad habits on grouse.haha.
some labs point antlers, toby points rattlesnakes all time, woops i mean he STANDS  rattlers.he STANDS  everything if i want but i never trained him to do it .he was standing a bear in yard last night just before he jumped on his back in my garbage can.
then i shot in air and toby came to STAND  as bear took off.
i taught him not to chase bears/deer,so he STANDS  on them .
to me, i call what toby does as a POINT and glad he does it. i wish i would have taught him to HOLD  it on grouse and not flush grouse.i know he would have done it but i did not know how to show him that is what i wanted him to do.
but flushing is exciting as you have to keep your gun ready at all times and i like missing grouse more than killing one anyhow as this leaves more grouse to hunt.

if LAB  points as many of you have why not let lab in on fun .maybe some would change their rules etc.

take care sproul

I'm getting a bit beyond caring about whether some formats accept them or not.
Have heard rumors that NSTRA is going to let them in, now I am guilty of spreading that one I guess.
Not a format I would enjoy, but the FDSB recognizes that format.
I enjoy the real deal a heck of a lot more than the games, but the seasons are a small part of the year,
and training for and playing the games has sure been a blast too.
Titles do take on a bit of importance to some (most ?) when it comes to breeding and shopping for the next dog etc.
Some formats are more respected than others, and those recognized by AKC / FDSB / AF / UKC / NAVDA etc. do carry some weight, NO GETTING AROUND THAT.

I put it more on the AKC than the FDSB.

FDSB trials are open to all recognized pointing breeds. AKC doesn't recognize labs as a pointing breed...........

It's a shame because wild bird trials, especially those with continuous coarses are a great way to show a good upland dog and how you stack up to the competition.

Yeah Randy, I agree.
In fact I think one of the keys, if not the biggest key is wild birds.
Harder all the time to do it. Darn shame.
