I would love to go west a couple of times before the end of the month...anyone need a 1yr old PL to find birds? I lack resources (AKA don't know where to go in KS and no one to go with)..she hunts hard and holds point well!....

Anyone want to mentor a novice hunter?

Robert, I would like to get one more in myself. The birds have not been good to me this year. It seems the roosters jump way ahead of me and the hens hold tight. Also it is always just me or 1 other person and that makes it hard to cover a big field. Champ and I have a fun first year though.

I had my limit of snow about three weeks ago!!! We have 30-35 inches of snow since the last day that it got above freezing. So I have not been out hunting in it much, I was holding out hope that we would see some thaw before the end of the season but we didn't.

Beamer and I decided to go out for the last day yesterday, worked our butts off. One time beamer was running along on top of the snow and then dropped through and All I could see was his head and his tail. Several times I was walking in what I thought was six inches of snow, only to drop through and be in a drift up to my waste, once I dropped into a creek and had to dig my way up the six foot bank, all looked level before I walked over it..... Beamer got one heck of a work out for no more then we hunted.

It was worth it though, we spent about an hour"herding" the birds from several small ditches into a larger one. Everything flushing 80-100 yards in front. When we got to the big ditch then I could see 50-80 pheasents running around in the ditch, flushing a little ways ahead but not going far. So I got a hold of my Dad who drove over to post. After waiting in the drift for about 15 minutes for him to get there, we started pushing towards each other and for about 15 minutes had all the shooting we could handle.....

Only regret was that we found out that a dog CAN NOT outrun a pheasent in that much snow. Had a runner get away, hunted hard for him, but the wind was blowing enough snow around that the trail turned cold in a hurry.

ANyways, beamer acted like he was quite content to just lay around when I was dragging myself out of bed this mornign. I'll bet he is at least as sore as I am.

The snow I can deal with! It just the below zero crap that froze everything this year a month and a half before the waterfowl season is over. Ive only killed one duck in the last 4 weeks. Doing a little preserve hunting and its been fun. The snow sure limits the cover for the birds though. But it beats sitting on the couch.
